Can anyone help with the whereabouts of my great grandfather in 1861?

He was born William Martin on 28th June 1847 at St Luke in Middlesex where the family lived at 16 King Street.

His parents were William and Anne. His father was born in Spitalfields, Middlesex in either 1809 or 1811, depending on the 1841 and 1851 census returns, and his mother Ann was born about 1821 at Bishopsgate, Middlesex.

None of the above family seems to appear anywhere in the 1861 census, so any help in finding any of them would be appreciated.

All I know about William Martin 1809/1811 is that he was married to Ann. I've now found the family in the 1861 census via Ancestry and it shows the "Varkins" living at No 12 Ford Road, which seems in the right area.

Problem is that William and Ann are shown as only 2 years apart in 1861 while the 1841 puts their age difference as 5 and 1851 shows it as 12

I know dates are not always reliable the further back you go

That's right Londonbelle,

You have the right record - William (1847) was born to William and Ann on 28th June and baptised along with sister Ann on 18th July 1847. Ann was then 2 years old being born in February 1845. They all lived at 16 King Street St Lukes.

I have found a further 2 children which may or may not be connected to you family; it might be worth following these up as I note it is the same area and the occupation of William Snr is Brass Finisher

Born: 19 Sep 1853
AND
Name: Charles Martin
Baptism Date: 10 Jun 1860
Born: 30 Aug (?) 1859
ADDRESS: 53 Murray Street
Father's Name: William Martin occ Brass Finisher

That's very helpful Londonbelle.

Both Williams, 1809 and 1847 were brass finishers - it ran in the family!

Do you know when William Snr or his wife Ann died? Wondering whether either parent could have remarried before the 1861 census.......just a thought!

Many 'pieces' of 1861 were damaged..................most of them were for the Home Counties

Look at the info about this on either Ancestry or FMP...................
