The Rueben in Hendon was on the 1861 census so it can't be him

Have a great day tomorrow. Hope you get some good results.

I'm beginning to think there are two Reuben Saunders born in Chesham circa 1810, one who went to Hendon and one who didn't. Which one is this I wonder

Just Googled it was. Workhouse later an institution

Yes ne was in Dinton in 1851 and is always referred to a s SANDERS, so I don't think he is our man.

Anything is possible, but I think he is the Cholesbury one which is part of Chesham and right next to Hawridge. Also in that 1851 census he is in Hendon. Can we establish if Dinton Reuben is in Dinton in 1851?

Another thought, but no proof, is that Reuben Saunders of Dinton (currently 17 miles from Chesham) did father Hannah in 1834 before his marriage in 1836 to Anne Perridge.

Wendy, amongst my scribblings (I'm learning fast to record my sources ) I have Hannah aged 16 with Eliza 19, Jane 13, all straw plaiters and a Sophia 7 living in Chesham. I think his will be The Elizabeth in the Amersham death register. It ,may be that I searched UKCENSUSONLINE and just made a note of Riddles who were straw plaiters in Chesham but not necessarily the same household.

From your earlier research William Riddle, baptised 4/3/1798 and married to Hannah (possibly Green & married 9/12/1822 Hemel Hempstead Herts- close to Chesham), had children Including Elizabeth born c 1836. There is also that gap between Elizabeth and Emma 1831. Perhaps Reuben fathered Hannah with Hannah and William refused to give the baby a home and she went to live with her aunt, Williams sister Mary? Mary didn't marry until 1840 and was presumably childless at the time.

I have done quite a bit of research working back from William Riddle 1768 and Mary Sloper should the connection with Anna ever be proved.

Thank you for continued input

Graham

PS probably of no use but I did post something on your Elwood thread x

Graham I looked at that Amersham birth for George and rejected it because when the 1861 census was taken on 07/04/1861 George was said to be four months but he could have been registered a little late or he wasn't quite four months so I think you are probably right.

What about this as a possible birth for Elizabeth, daughter of Hannah.

Births Sep 1857 (>99%)
Riddle Elizabeth Jane Amersham 3a 312

The two Elizabeth deaths you found

Dec 1860 3a 234

Sep 1863 3a 267

would make Elizabeth 3 or 6 when she died. I can't find her in the 1873 census.

If this George or Elizabeth are Hannahs their birth certificates would give the father if he is named.

Hannah's mother is still bugging me but I'm not sure we will ever find her.

Penny, George was born first quarter 1861. I have a record in the Amersham Register for March qtr 1861, 3a 344, from FreeBMD

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Pretty likely that is my George

its quite possible that George was born pre marriage, may or may not be Eli's child

There are two deaths for an Elizabeth Riddle, Amersham registry,

Dec 1860 3a 234

Sep 1863 3a 267

But doesn't give age at death. Elizabeth would have been 38 or 41

Hannah, Elizabeth 3 and George Riddle (spelt Riddell) were living with Edwin and Mary Dwight in 1861. Hannah was unmarried. Mary Dwight was Mary Final Eli's sister and she married Edwin Dwight in 1852. Edwin died in the workhouse in 1904 and Mary died in 1889.

The Finals, Dwights and Riddles seem to be linked somehow.

I cant find a birth registration for Elizabeth Riddle 1858 and George Riddle 1860, re 1861, born Chesham

Still no nearer finding Hannahs parents

Graham I, like most of the members on here, love research and love finding the answer to a problem. We still haven't found your Hannah's mother but I think I have found her grand parents if she really was the niece as mentioned in 1851. Hannah could have been base born and she made up a fathers name for her marriage. I'll keep looking to see what else I can find.
