I've been trying to find out who lived at 42 Forsyth Street, Duffus, Morayshire on the 1841 and 1851 Census but it appears there is no address in these years,
Can anyone help with finding out if it was called anything else.
I thank anyone in advance for their help.

Very few houses were numbered in those days.........it was the introduction and spread of the Postal Service which prompted house numbering.

Ditto naming of streets................

And even after the initial numbering, changes were often made, so the house which has that number now may not have done so in years gone by

Have you any idea of when the house was built?

Hello macgregor - welcome to the boards.

Are you researching the house itself, or are you trying to find a particular family who lived there at one point? If the latter, do you want to give details?

Dear Reggie
No, I'm sorry, I don't have that information. I'll have to do some more research on that one.
My Great Great Grandmother was Bridget Simpson, m/s Magher. She returned to the above address between 1854 and 1861 as she is on 1861 Census. My GGG/F was killed in the Crimean war in 1854. I assumed that the house was possibly owned by a member of the Simpson family.
Thank you anyway for replying.
Kind regards

Evelyn :-(

So, who was Bridget's husband?

Have you looked for him in 1841?

Where did they marry?

macgregor Report 31 Jul 2013 09:59

Bridge'ts husband was William Simpson, (my GGG'F), born 1816 in Alves, Morayshire and killed in the Crimean war in 1854. He was a Sergeant in the 2nd Batallion Rifle Brigade. Bridget was born in Waterford approx 1820 and they married in Canada in 1843. This is why I thought that she must have stayed in a house that possibly belonged to William's family. Why else would she return to the Moray area. She died at 26 Abbey Street, Elgin in 1895. I don't know if that house belonged to the family either. My Grandfather was born there in 1874.

Do you know who William's parents were? I can find a baptism for a William Simpson, 24th Sep 1816 in Forres - father Alexander, mother Katherine Crocy
