I'm afraid he committed suicide.

Headline: TRAGEDY OF REJECTION.
Publication:Nottingham Evening Post
Publication date:Monday 01 May 1916

I'll summarise what the article says as the details are rather unpleasant (if you want a copy of the article let me know and I'll send it by pm).

The body of Joseph Bridge Standen (a clerk age 33 of Kilbourne Street, Nottingham) was found by two soldiers passing through Clifton Grove. His body was found in the woods near what is known as the cow path.

He had shot himself in the head and the gun (for which he'd recently obtained a licence) was on him.

He was described as being of a reserved disposition and had recently been rejected by the army, which had apparently preyed on his mind. He had also been unwell and received treatment for pains in his head.

A verdict of suicide during temporary insanity was returned.

Poor man.
