Yes, it seems that 1886 death date is correct, but the age is incorrect, as he would have been about 79. The 1902 Glasgow one would be his son Moses, as he was born in 1849, but the others are maybe a different branch of the family.

I have located his parents Michael Ewing and Mary Drummond via Family Search and Mundia, where I also found Michael's parents Robert Ewing and Margaret Flint, so this has been a very successful line of inquiry, finding three generations after being a brick wall for so long.

Thanks for your help too :)

Andrew, I am not seeing the family in 1871 but young Moses is around in 1891 and 1901. He is also a blacksmith.

Now as daddy Moses and his wife died after the 1861 census, it may be worth looking on Scotlandspeople for a death for them. That could give you confirmation of their parents names including the mothers' maiden surnames if the informant knew the details.

Had a wee quick look on SP. There are only 4 Moses Ewings deaths on SP - almost certainly from the same family as 3 are in Glasgow and 1 in Clacks. Of the Glasgow ones, Dennistoun and Bridgeton are next door to one another and Hutchesontown just across the River Clyde.

Yes its the same family, thanks for that - it's also more accurate with ages, which tie in with Moses' birth date of 1807 - I have found a birth record and his parents marriage record as well, so the line is gradually coming together

No Glitter baby, that won't be her, as she sailed out to New Zealand in 1865, on the clipper ship 'Peter Denny'

Yes, I had my doubts about the birth year, seems many of the immigrants 'fudged' their ages when they moved to NZ, there have been a lot of age differences show up in my research

@ Glitterbaby - is that census record for Clackmannanshire? - that may explain why I couldn't find them in Glasgow for that time

Andrew

Thanks Beverley, that's the census record ok, but I hadn't found the marriage

Reggie - I found a thread on Rootsweb with a transcription of deaths recorded in the Arrowtown (New Zealand) area 1876-1899, from a book in the local museum there. All the other data in the transcription checks out, so I have no reason to doubt the name given for her father

If there is no parental info on the marriage cert, how did you determine that her father was named Moses?

Andrew

Andrew Report 16 Aug 2013 22:45

Thanks - she married in New Zealand, so that isn't much use for Scotland enquiries - the marriage certificate is very limited and doesn't give name and place of parents. Still waiting on a copy of the death certificate to see if that can shed any more light, but I was just hoping someone might have some more ideas of how to track them in Scotland

GlitterBaby Report 16 Aug 2013 22:44

Possibles on 1851, 1861 and 1901 but not sure as does not appear to have married

Hi there Fraser - did she marry? if so, who?

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 16 Aug 2013 22:39

When and where did she marry ?

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 16 Aug 2013 22:38

You need either family search or the parish records on Scotlandspeople which is not a subscription site.

Civil registration began in Scotland in 1855 so you would not find a birth cert

Andrew

Andrew Report 16 Aug 2013 22:34

Trying to locate a birth record for a gg grandmother, Helen (Ellen) Ewing - apparently born in Glasgow around 1845-47, if her age at death is correct - and also any records of her father Moses Ewing, a blacksmith. I have found one record of him in the 1841 census, in Taylor Street, Glasgow, but nothing else conclusive. Any help would be much appreciated.
