James Belton - Churt 1870

I am trying to help a friend find out about his Great Grandfather James Belton.
We know that from both the 1901 & 1911 census's that he was born 1870, & that he gives his place of birth as Churt in Surrey. I am struggling to find his birth registration, if one exists at all, plus the fact that both the Churt & Fresham parishes seem to merge at this time, as well as Belton being a common surname in this part of Surrey.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Robert, before 1874 there were no penalties on parents if they didn't register births so many simply didn't bother.

Can your friend tell you more about James' later life so there are some accurate facts to work back from? For example, that marriage Maureen posted could be very helpful if you confirm who James was married to.

Maureen - I can confirm that this is his marriage to Isabella Mary Kemp.

Mavis - From the research that I have done I to think that this could be our man, but am struggling to pin down a Carpenter family member to the Belton family.

MarieCeleste - apart from the marriage certificate, the only other information is from the 1901 & 1911 census's.
