AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 29 Aug 2013 11:03

perhaps Drake was the maiden name of the mother of William or Sarah?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Aug 2013 11:04

There's a tree on Ancestry which gives Sarah's surname as Pavier.
No mention of Drake except in the children's names, which you've stated.

It also lists a fifth child, James Pavier Dowell, 1795-1871

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 29 Aug 2013 11:08

the wife's maiden name is Davies though

Name: James Pavier Dowell
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 07 Apr 1795
Christening Place: SIDBURY,DEVON,ENGLAND
Father's Name: Willm Dowell
Mother's Name: Sarah Davies
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C05166-1
System Origin: England-ODM
GS Film number: 916934

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Aug 2013 11:34

Hmm - yes, the tree has conflicting information.

If you search All Categories (on Ancestry) for (say) Henry Drake Dowell, there's a result which says his parents were William Dowell and Sarah Davies.
But when you open the tree, it gives her name as Pavier.

The only verification given is for some of the deaths.

Hello, Joyce -

What someone puts on their tree is not necessarily correct.
The tree owner hasn't said where they got the information from.

The christening record posted by AnnCardiff is an official record, but it might be that James Pavier Dowell belongs to a different family of Dowells from yours.

The tree owner might have confused two familes, and thought they were just one.
So far, we haven't found any proof of anything!

May I ask, where did you get the name Barber from? Have you found an official record, or maybe gravestone?

Barber / Baber/ Paver/ Pavier could be just different spellings or interpretations of the same name (whatever it was!).
Spelling wasn't standardised in those days - it could depend on what the clerk thought the name sounded like.

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 29 Aug 2013 14:25

I see there is a possible birth in 1780 for Sarah Paviour and it looks like she was illegitimate as it just names her mother; Sarah Paviour. Then I came across this,

Name: William Baker
Birth Date:
Birthplace:
Age:
Spouse's Name: Sarah Pavior

I wonder if Baber/ Barber was meant to be Baker, her stepfather s name?? Just to confuse more??

Drake could be William Dowells mothers maiden name or even a maiden name from further generations back?? My own ancestors named their children with Bate in their name from the maiden name of the great grandmother.........Bate was a Noble name from the area and maybe carried a "punch" with it.

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 29 Aug 2013 14:36

If you look at the names Davies and Pavier you'll see that they could very easily be confused...... I think Davies has been mistranscribed and I would imagine if you were to look at the Parish record you would most than ,likely see it as Pavier, sometimes when you know what a name should be it is lots easier to decipher.

BatMansDaughter
