Dare I ask again?
William b 1865 married Annie b 1863 at the Pontypool registry office on 9 June 1884 after which I can find no definitive record. He was then a collier like his dad.
No census records that I can find.
No death records.
No obvious entries as having emigrated in the "Travel" section on GR.
The Regimental & service records show 5 entries, none very conclusive.
It would be good to have some advice as to how I track them down

Message from Guy.

Yes, there are several William' Mayers's but you have the right one in the 1871 census. Annie was the daughter of Cornelius Murphy and the marriage cert shows her as 21 i.e born 1863 but I haven't chased her birth cert.
Any ideas as to what happened to this couple?


I can't find an Annie Murphy born Bristol with Cornelius as father. I did wonder at this though. Also living in Trevithen.

Mayers Gertrude Alice Pontypool 11a 124

Thanks to all your help we have William & Annie married 9 Jun 1884, followed by birth of Gertrude Alice in 1895. Then a blank for 9 years with the presumed but unproven death of William. Annie then marries John Thomas in Spring 1894 and Davey is born in 1896 and brother James in 1898 followed by latecomer Ethel in 1905 when Annie was already around 40!
Gertrude married Alfred Pinchem and by 1911 had had two sons William & Fred.

It would be good to nail what happened to William - any ideas? In those days divorce was surely just not an option and for Annie to remarry her first husband would have to have died - wouldn't he? What evidence could Annie have produced if we cannot now find any?

Annie' and William were both living in Sow Hill Pontypool at the time of their marriage when her father Cornelius was shown as a collier.
