am trying to trace family members from Newport in South Wales under the name of Davies (groan) or sometimes Davis (bigger groan) and have reached a bit of a dead end. I don’t know if anyone has any ideas of where I might go next.

Charles Davies (1857-1911) was my great grandfather on my mother’s side. His father, John Davies (1832/3-1887) was married to Mary Ann Serle in 1852. So far so good. But I’m having difficulty tracing one generation further back.

On John’s and Mary’s marriage certificate he is listed as a 20-year-old labourer from the Pillgwenlly area of Newport (St Woollos also comes up frequently but it is the same area). His surname is transcibed as Davis and his father is also shown as John Davis, a gardener by trade. Mary Ann’s father is called Richard Serle (although I have also found other documentation transcribing his name as Sarell). The marriage is witnessed by Charles Serle (presumably Mary Ann’s brother) and Eliza Davis. I am assuming that she is in fact John’s mother. I have found records for a marriage between John Davies and Elizabeth Jeremiah in June 1831, but the only baptism records I can find for John Davies/Davis junior for around 1832 are two, and neither quite fits the profile. The first is for John Davis, 22 June 1831 (parents John and Elinor/Eleanor) and another for John Davis 17 June 1832, (parents David and Mary). If I could either establish whether either of these are what I am looking for, or find the one that is, then I would be able to see the parents’ names and go from there. I have tried everything I know from my computer, without anything conclusive. Just wondered if anyone out there can help in any way.
Thanks for trying if you do.
