Rosamond Report 15 Sep 2013 19:07

Thank you to everyone , who has helped me with my journey of discovery in to the mystery of Lucy Knott, My Great Auntie. Growing up I knew very little except she had married and emigrated to American Had a son and adopted a son, this adopted son accidently shot the real son. But Gt Aunt Lucy and her husband who I now know was Herbert Heasell, felt that John had gone through enough and brought him up as their own son. I often wonder just who were Johns real parentsd and the real story wnich brought about his adoption. I use to corrispond with John s wife Susan, but when she died, John stopped writing and I just assumed he had died. But it seems he could be still alive so now I shall look for him again. He is sort of a second cousin to me. I know a lot about Lucys sister who was killed by enemy bombing during the blitz on Bath, she and her husband Oliver Cox were killed by a direct hit on their house and they are buried wityh all the others who were killed that night, in Haycombe chemitory, Bath. Their two sons survived one was in the army and the other was under them.. Thank you also to MC and Flip for sorting out Sarah Knott for me this has put together the mystery of who Sarah married and I remembering visiting people called Hemmings in Atworth, I think his name was Wilf so I assume was a Wilfred..he had an amazing sense of humour I thought they were just friends of the faomily, but now I find they were mums cousins just need to find the linc back to Sarah and Arthur Hermmings. Anyway thank you all for your help.
Rosamond.

I think that also confirms that baby Wilfred will have died, there is no sign of him on the census or later records - and if he had been adopted then his original birth record would have been "over-written"

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 15 Sep 2013 13:49

I think they must have been a very big hearted family to keep John after what happened.

I found this link which seems to explain that an adopted child in California has an amended birth record so that explains why John's birth is apparently registered as Heasell (as originally found by Gins).

Flip Report 15 Sep 2013 13:44

That is a great find MC, I'm pretty sure you've nailed it. When will the American's learn guns are not good? That family must have been traumatised by such an event, it just doens't bear thinking about.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 15 Sep 2013 13:34

I couldn't find a death for baby Wilfred but I think there may be a separate register.

This looks like the death of Herbert Knott jnr
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-26184-5586-44?cc=1932433&wc=14216747

Died 15 Nov 1936, age 15 so John was only 7 when the accident happened. Poor kids.

Flip

Flip Report 15 Sep 2013 13:21

Just a week after the birth of Wilfred, so that looks very likely MC. Wonder what happened to the baby?

Checked for a birth for John White, with the same birth date as John William Heasell - but nothing, so wonder if they do in fact change the registration on adoption. Tried googling, but didn't come up with much to explain the proceedures.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 15 Sep 2013 13:14

I think I've found the death of Elizabeth Knott (nee Bray)

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-26181-13732-56?cc=1932433&wc=14216746

The death was 20 March 1921, age 35. Husband's initials A J.

The county code is 90 which = San Francisco, which is where they were on the 1920 census.

This just doesn't make sense!

California Birth Index, 1905-1995
Name: John William Heasell
Birth Date: 16 Feb 1929
Gender: Male
Mother's Maiden Name: Knott ???
Birth County: San Francisco

Is this John White??

EDIT: I don't know anything about Californian births and adoptions, could his birth record be amended to reflect the adoption?

I also think this man is still alive as there are possible telephone/address listings.
http://radaris.com/p/John/Heasell/

He appears to have married a Susan in 1976.

Sorry for jumping about but wanted to tidy up the family first asked about.

It looks like John White took the name Heasell in later years:

Name: Lucy Heasell
Gender: Female
Residence Year: 1947
Street Address: 1520 14th

At the same address is John W Heasell

Did you look at the image MC? The next family listed are called Wallace, including Winifred, who's age fits and she states she is English/Canada - could just be a coincidence though.
