:-S
Hi fellow researchers, I am trying to fing my grandfather on the 1911 census but am getting no where.
Hi name was John Thomas Mcnulty born in 1904 in Morley, leeds.
His parent were James Mcnulty b 1874 Mayo Ireland and Winifred Pritchard b 1882 Kerry Ireland, I have managed to find JT's parents but he is not living with them in Castleford, west Yorkshire.
Where am I going wrong ?

The 1911 census says they've had 2 children and both are still living but neither one are with them.

Perhaps the father didn't think he had to record the children?

He's included all the adults in the household................

Hi Angela,
I am presuming that your birth data is accurate i.e from a cert or West Yorkshire Records in Leeds.

There is a possible explanation for your Grandfather's omission: perhaps his parents did not want to include him. I know that they had a legal duty to declare him but were they literate, was he the firstborn and they just missed him OR had they told a few porkies and sent him to work (under age ) in the mill - they may well have been desperate for the little extra cash. They could have covered their deed by omitting his existence from the census; the 1911 census was the first to be fully completed by the householder.
If the mill was more than an easy walk away he could have pretended to have no parents stayed and at 'accomadation' provided by the company alternatively stayed with a relative or family friend .

Try West Yorkshire Archives or Pudsey Parish Clarks on line-it's free- if you are not on Ancestry.

good luck

Any chance he is with his mother's parents - are they still in Ireland?

No John McNulty's in Co Kerry in 1911.

Some of approx right age in Co Mayo, where his father came from:

McNulty John Boherhallagh Toomore Mayo 9 M
McNulty John Ballintemple Meelick Mayo 8 M
McNulty John Cuillonaghtan Callow Mayo 8 M
McNulty John Belderg Beg Belderg More Mayo 7 M
McNulty John Boherhallagh Toomore Mayo 7 M

But all seem to be with their parents.

I all, thank you for all your replies.
Derek, I have his birth cert so everything is correct, He isn't with his other family members as I have thoroughly searched the census's, you could be on to something re the mill, thanks.

Patchem, no his grandparents are in Morley, leeds and he isn't there. thanks

Susan, yes the info you have given is correct, his sister was called Mary b1908 Hunslet, leeds.

Argyllgran, the info you have provided is correct , I have all this info, I am just finding it frustrating as my grandfather was my dads father and my father is 75 this year and the plan is for me to put together as much info about his family that I can.

Kay, no this isn't him, the other names are no relation to my family, thanks

Reggie, yes that is JT's birth, his birth was registered in 1905 as he was born in Dec 1904 in West Ardsley which I thought came under Leeds but apparently it comes under Wakefield, anyway the plot thickens and I shall keep plugging away, thanks for your help.
