Thank you Ann, it certainly could be,

I need to find out when James left for NZ and where from, before I could draw any conclusions about Mary Allen being his daughter, or whether perhaps Allen was a fairly common name in and around Derry.

Trying to find any connections to James Allen, my 4gUncle, brought up by his uncle in Derry following the death of his parents. His brother, my 3gGrandfather, John ran away to sea aged 9. Both emigrated to NZ, John in 1842 from Kilmarnock where he had settled following12 years in the Navy.John settled in the Taieri plan, Otago, and his surname changed to Allan, tradition has it, as a gesture to his wife whose name was Agnes Allan.

So I'm looking either for details of John and James parents, or descendants of James Allen.
