No GR took away the mark as unanswered button...which is a shame as it was useful particularly if you added a new question to an old and previously answered thred

....what I did the other day was edit the first post to say - go to last post and ignore answered button!

Thanks everyone! I marked it as answered as I thought it was. ! I didn't want people to watse time when I had already got good suggestions to follow up . I seem to be upsetting everybody on here at the moment though.
You can't mark something as Unanswered afterwards either - unless anyone knows different?

Do you suppose that the person who rr'd it was given a slap on the wrist, Ann?

AnnCardiff

so, my innocuous posting has been restored

If he was still a serving soldier when the return to the UK happened, his passage would have been arranged by the military authorities, and the family would almost certainly have been repatriated at the same time.

If he was a civilian when he returned, he would have had to make his own arrangements.

Please stick to one post per topic..........and don't use 'marked as answered' until you need NO further help

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 12 Jan 2014 08:17

It might also depend on when he retired. My great Uncle went to India with the Argyll and Sutherlands. When they returned to Britain on the eve of WW1, he stayed, and married. He became the Chief of Police for West Bengal. So when I find him and his wife travelling back they did indeed go commercial line.

FairlyFatFairy - whilst you do provide links to your previous postings on the same subjects it would help everyone all round if you just added your request to the original post (we would then have all the information in one place).

Avoid the "marked as answered" tick at all costs - it is neither use nor ornament. Complete waste of time and has been reported to Genes team umpteen times to no avail.

ADDED: To the idiot who reported Ann's perfectly sensible reply - get a life. Same thing could be said to Bobtanian for a puerile response.

The Muster Rolls for his regiment (at the National Archives) would give an idea of when he went back to England although the ship wouldn't be named

FIBIS would very probably be able to answer the question

http://www.fibis.org/

they do have indexes of arrival and departure notices

http://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/index.php

but not that late, it seems, but someone there would likely be familiar with what you're asking about

you might be advised to take a membership and ask about it on the social network (discussion forum that you can't see without a membership), it's £15.00 per year but you might be able to flesh out various things by asking there.

Why do you keep marking everything as answered?

When they are not?

Unless of course you don't want any more help

Just doing some google searching, so not specific to your query, but shows what others are looking for:

why on earth has someone reported my posting? All I said was that I would have thought they came back the same way they went out, by a British ship - what's wrong with that?

Familyfinder

Familyfinder Report 11 Jan 2014 17:26

Ann - She didn't travel out-she was born there -as were her children. (I have now found that info)

I just didn't know if civilians and soldiers went on sameboat or whether they would have been separated. I'm not sure whether he retired right away or a couple of years later.

Shame no records

Thanks Margee

Unfortunately the UK incoming passenger lists don't start until 1878.

AnnCardiff

I would have thought they would come back the way they travelled out to India - on a British ship

If a soldier retired from service in 1873 (ish) in India and retured to Britain with a wife and two small children- how would he travel back?

Not sure if it would be arranged by the military or would they have had to get a private crossing?

It would be

Henry C H Strong age about 40
Winifred Strong about 24
Wiliam Strong about 3
Henry Strong about 1

I know they were in India 1873 and by 1876 are in Devon,England.

I have asked things about them before so please don't waste time looking up anything else! its JUST the journey I'm enquiring about
