Thanks Jude - I thought I was doing the right thing as else people keep giving the same suggestions about ten times over sometimes. Thanks for your help ;) I will remmeber NEVER to mark anything as answered ever ever again lol

No GR took away the mark as unanswered button...which is a shame as it was useful particularly if you added a new question to an old and previously answered thred

....what I did the other day was edit the first post to say - go to last post and ignore answered button!

Thanks everyone! I marked it as answered as I thought it was. ! I didn't want people to watse time when I had already got good suggestions to follow up . I seem to be upsetting everybody on here at the moment though.
You can't mark something as Unanswered afterwards either - unless anyone knows different?

If he was still a serving soldier when the return to the UK happened, his passage would have been arranged by the military authorities, and the family would almost certainly have been repatriated at the same time.

If he was a civilian when he returned, he would have had to make his own arrangements.

Please stick to one post per topic..........and don't use 'marked as answered' until you need NO further help

It might also depend on when he retired. My great Uncle went to India with the Argyll and Sutherlands. When they returned to Britain on the eve of WW1, he stayed, and married. He became the Chief of Police for West Bengal. So when I find him and his wife travelling back they did indeed go commercial line.

Avoid the "marked as answered" tick at all costs - it is neither use nor ornament. Complete waste of time and has been reported to Genes team umpteen times to no avail.

The Muster Rolls for his regiment (at the National Archives) would give an idea of when he went back to England although the ship wouldn't be named

why on earth has someone reported my posting? All I said was that I would have thought they came back the same way they went out, by a British ship - what's wrong with that?

Ann - She didn't travel out-she was born there -as were her children. (I have now found that info)

I just didn't know if civilians and soldiers went on sameboat or whether they would have been separated. I'm not sure whether he retired right away or a couple of years later.
