Find Ancestors

HELP...PLEASE!

I'm looking for help in tracing a Thomas Splatt (1767) who was a mariner/Sea Captain. I have very little to go on except that he lived in Aberdour, Fife and married a Margaret Beatson in Aberdour around 1790. They had at least two children:Thomas and Janet. I've been able to trace partial records for the latter.
I can find no record of Thomas' birth or the deaths of both him and his wife.

Family records suggest that Thomas was born in either Aberdour or Devon. Later generations went by the surname of Splat/Splate/Spleet/Splitt and remained in the Fife and West Lothian areas of Scotland. However some headed for Australia, New Zealand and maybe even the Caribean.

I've tried all the records I know of but keep going round in circles!!!!!

Thanks for responses so far but none of them take me forward.

The key is to find a Thomas Splatt who was a mariner who visited, or was born in Scotland and married a Margaret Beatson. Their marriage took place in Aberdour, Fife......I have record of that. Apart from the birth of two children, I've found no record of them. Why? Did they move on and if so when and how do I confirm this?
