Where have you found the information that he was born in Gilmerton, Carole?
Per ScotlandsPeople, these are all the Andrew Blackie (or variation) births in Midlothian 1855 - 65 - none are in Gilmerton The Newington or Newton births would be the nearest geographically, but the dates aren't near 1854:

Thanks for responding, I appreciate it - he always told his children that he was born at Gilmerton although the 1861 & 1871 census show Liberton.
He had 4 brothers and 2 sisters and I've found the baptisms for all but him and his brother before him!
A couple of times a year I go to Scot People to search in case it's been added.
The family moved around Edinburgh until his father Walter died and his mother Margaret Jack remarried.
He quite possibly is listed under John Andrew or Andrew John as his middle name was Jack.
I posted my query in case there were descendants of the only bro to stay in Scotland, James, who may have the family Bible or other paperwork.

Andrew is most likely be the son of Walter Blackie and Margaret Jack.
Family search does not show their marriage
Only the births of William, James and Mary are on FS
William baptised 1846 Dalkieth
James baptosed 1848 Dalkeith
Mary BORN 8 Apr 1855 registered in Lasswade
Assuming these are his siblings, Andrew must have been born earlier than Sep1854
( Mary born just 7months after this estimate)
Margaret Jack remarried James McNeil in Newbattle on 31 Dec 1860
