Thank you Jacqueline, alviegal, and Catherine. I am somewhat unsure that the 1841 census is them as it would suggest an age of 12 for John getting married. I grant that a five year discrepancy would take him upto 17 but I would hope for a better match.
A marriage giving the fathers names would be some help. My original thought that it was a bit unlikely that Sarah would make it to 1851, to positively identify her age and place of birth.
The marriage follows finding

Name: Elizabeth Hudson
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 03 Jun 1810
Christening Place: NEW OR ZION INDEPENDENT,WAKEFIELD,YORK,ENGLAND
Birth Date: 12 Apr 1809
Father's Name: John Hudson

Mother's Name: Sarah

Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C13368-1 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 828166

whose credentials come from later census when married and with her family

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 23 Dec 2014 16:42

Was Elizabeth the only child?

Her baptism would suggest that her parents were not C of E, which would rule out the 1798 marriage.

Marriage records of that era do not include info about fathers

Frances

Frances Report 23 Dec 2014 16:56

Yes Jacqueline these are the children I found before picking the marriage between John and Sarah. She would have been 39 for Jame's birth so all possible

Thank you alviegal. Now you are just trying to mess with my head! Could The surnames Nicholson and Simpson be the same Sarah and have been messed up in the transcription?

Frances

It is the only one after 1841 with a husband John - time to look for a gravestone?

Does John - Butcher show up in 1851, as a widower?
