Hello
My great, great grandfather George Turnbull lived for most of his life in Inverness-shire in the farming industry. He married Janet Leslie with whom he had ten offsprings. I believe that he was born in Roxburghshire (1861 census says Cavers) but others say Inverness-shire and Sutherland. Can anyone throw any light on him prior to 1841 and/or his direct ancestors as I have nothing of prior to that time.

Thanking anyone in anticipation

Ian

Have you looked at familysearch for possible baptism?

His parents should be named on his death cert

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 23 Jan 2015 16:08

Where in Roxburghshire is Cavers?

In view of the number of possibilities above, you definitely need the death cert I would say

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 23 Jan 2015 16:14

This could rule out the 1809 baptism

A tree on Ancestry has 13 children listed also a photo of George and another one of George & Janet. Unfortunately it doesn't have parents of George. It does however have Janet's parents as Simon Leslie & Isabel Grant.

Jacqueline Report 23 Jan 2015 16:19

1841 simply says Scotland as his birthplace

Have you seen the image of 1851?

It looks to me as though the wife's birthplace has been incorrectly assigned to George by the transcriber. 1861 clearly says she was born in Kingussie.................not Alvie, which is where the children were born

Don't tell him to go to "My Threads" Cynthia, it doesn't work today. Not for me anyway.

Thanks to those who answered my call for help. Sorry but I am at it again.
1. Suggestion to look at certificates. Scotland's People only publish births after 1854 and deaths before 1855. genes and ancestry don't do Scottish B,M,Ds at all. Does anyone know of other sites that provide such info for Scotland?

2. Cavers is listed on Scotland's People in the regions of Roxburghshire.

3. The suggestion of George being the child of William and Isabella seems quite likely as both of those names cascade through the generations , Similarly the names of William and Isabella's other off springs appear in all the following generations.

4. It would be "great" if that William was George's father as I can trace that ancestry to a Sir John Turnbull and Lady Alice Brogan. (c. 1640). Which would be the nearest I am likely to get to aristocracy.

Again thanks for your contributions.

A blast from the past. Two years since I posted my query. Thanks to all who gave some answers. I have recently "proved" that my ancestor George Turnbull was the son of William Turnbull and Isabella Young. Jacqueline gave these names as one of the alternatives to investigate. Many thanks to her and if she reads this, can she say where she obtained the information from.

If it's any help Ian, this is on FindMyPast. I would imagine that it will also be available on Scotlandspeople as I think that's where Familysearch got the record collection from. If it is you will probably be able to find christenings for his siblings there.

The records can be found for free in the Mormon genealogy site - a good one to have in your favourites

https://familysearch.org

You'll also find them on the Scotland's People website - register to join, initial search for free.
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

The result of a search for the George you have actually identified as yours would show the following -

Surname TURNBULL
Forename GEORGE
Parents/ Other Details WILLIAM TURNBULL/ISABEL YOUNG FR679 CHILD 3 (FR679)
Age 0
Date 22/10/1809
Parish Number 810/
Ref 30 66
Parish Wilton

You buy credits - £7.50 I think now for 30 credits. 6 credits lets you look at the more detailed record which can then be downloaded. The baptism above is from Old Parish Registers so may not tell you much more if you look at the image, but post registration documents show much more than an English certificate for around £1.50

Thank you "rootgatherer" and "greyghost".

I do subscribe to Scotland's People but will try the Morman website.

Again thanks

Oh, to be taking a walk around Loch an Eilein or to Lochan Deo and beyond. Had some lovely holidays based in Aviemore - makes a change from the flat Hampshire coastline. You're very lucky Alviegal.
