I have just received a birth certificate for Martha Butcher Fitch, b. 1866 Northfleet Kent. It states father William Henry Fitch and mother Elizabeth Row. On the 1871 census it states both parents born in Colchester Essex, mothers name Emily but on later census she is down as Elizabeth also Emily. I just can't find a marriage for a William or William Henry Fitch to an Elizabeth or Emily Row in Kent nor in Colchester. Did find a Emily Butcher married in Colchester but no William Fitch listed . Unable to proceed with the tree so any help will be appreciated. Many thanks

Hi Malyon I had wondered that myself and had seen this marriage in Thanet Kent in 1864 but dismissed it. In 1865 Emily Fitch on 1871 census had a son his name William Butcher Fitch and in 1866 daughter Martha Butcher Fitch. As stated on birth cert for daughter mother Elizabeth formerly Row, possibly her maiden name was Butcher hence why middle name Butcher for both children. Unable to understand where the Row comes in. Just don't think the marriage in Jun 1864 could be the one I want. 1871 census states William and Elizabeth were both born in Colchester Essex.

I have been looking for a marriage between a Row and a Butcher but not found anything so far.

John Report 7 Jun 2016 00:38

Hi Sylvia. I have tried all combinations but unable to find anything. At one stage I found a William Fetch but don't seem to find it again. I'm doing this for my cousins son and looked into people's trees but they seem to have got it all wrong , Martha B Fitch has wrong parents, hence why I bought her birth certificate.

Thank you all for your recent messages. I will dismiss William being in Prison 1869 because in 1871 he was living in Gravesend with family. The death in 1884 a very strong possibility. Could not find William or wife Elizabeth/Emily in 1881 census but found daughter Marta Butcher Fitch living as an in servant at a men's outfitters ( incidentally the shop only closed just a few yrs ago) her brother William Butcher Fitch was by that time a fisherman going to sea and settled in Lincolnshire with a family of his own but in 1901 his mother Elizabeth 76 widow living with him. The marriage of Emily Elizabeth Row in Ramsgate will dismiss because found her in previous census with her family in Margate Kent. The 1881 Wiliam Fitch living in Swanscombe Kent, although it's near Gravesend , throws me because states widower yet wife Elizabeth still alive, who the Elizabeth is living with him unmarried yet born in Colchester, I wouldn't think it was wrong info written down.. I just can't find a marriage for William and Elizabeth Fitch but somehow I feel there must be some connection with the name Butcher because of them giving both their children as a second name.

Rambling Report 7 Jun 2016 12:59

Just looking at the 1871 census, given the ages of William and Emily, the children are born to Emily when she was 40/42...which is quite late so I would assume there are children prior to that , or it is a second marriage for both?

Have you found William in 1861 or before?

Hi Malyon, well that's very interesting, re John and Elizabeth Row, so if she married William Fitch wonder where her 2 children were. It does state on all the census records from 1871 to 1901 that Elizabeth was born in Colchester Essex and she married prior 1864. looking at the 1851 census it states that Elizabeth Row was born in Eastbourne Sussex, Looks good being a John Row and Elizabeth Butcher but I really have my doubts as being the one I want
