Kathleen Report 21 Jun 2016 22:03

After searching for my G Grand mother for a few years I took a break to care for my sister. Now I'm back and thought I had found mays death, after ordering the death certificate it is the wrong may as she was a Collins by marriage.

May Collins b Manchester 1883 to Robert and Ruth Collins, She had a son John Collins b 1907 Manchester, no father on certificate.

Someone said as she had a son out of wedlock she went in to the work house and gave him up for adoption. This info was wrong as his granddad brought him up,
he is living with his G dad on the 1911 census.

I was then told that may died in the Withington work house, so found a death and ordered the cert but the wrong one.

Now what else can I do to track her down.
any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes May b 1883 I have found her on the census up to 1901 but nothing after except for her sons birth.
greyghost the May that died in the workhouse in 1932 isn't my May, that is the cert that I got and she is married to James Collins and Collins seems to be her married name.

It sounds as if the June 1883 was refering to the quarter her birth was registered in.

Brought forward -

First name(s) MAY
Last name COLLINS
Birth year 1883
Birth quarter 2
Registration month -
Mother's last name -
District CHORLTON
County Lancashire
Country England
Volume 8C
Page 730

Q1 = Jan to March
Q2 = Apr to Jun.

If you only have the birth reg, you'd need to get the certificate to find her full date of birth. As there were 6 weeks to register a birth, It could be as early as 26 Feb or as late as 30 Jun!

The exact date of birth - as known by the informant - was included on DC from the June quarter 1969 (deaths reg from April 1969)
Even if she died before then, its often possible to work out if the record is a likely one

May probably went into the workhouse hospital to have her baby ......

........ workhouse hospitals were the only place where people could get free medical care back then

Other information on the record of the Workhouse posted by Shirley were that May was CofE, was admitted from Ardwick, and that she had given the information herself. Her birth year is shown as 1882 .......... presumably given by her
