Could this be the same man??
He's one of a large number of boarders at Munroe (Monroe ?) House, and is married, and an architect:

Chas Scholl
in the 1860 United States Federal Census
Name: Chas Scholl
Age: 30
Birth Year: abt 1830
Gender: Male
Birth Place: England
Home in 1860: St Louis Ward 6, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri

EDIT: No your Charles married in 1868, so not the same person unless he'd been married before.

in the Savannah, Georgia, Court Records, 1790-1934

Name: Charles Sholl
Court Date: 10 Nov 1857
Civil Place: Savannah, Chatham, Georgia

In court for not paying a bill of 89 dollars, 24 cents - mainly for alcohol, but also a lot of Stilton cheese.

There's a whole page of writing , which I'm not going to type out here.
If you think this is your man, and if you like to PM me your email address, I'll send it as an attachment.

Charles M Sholl
in the Georgia, Wills and Probate Records, 1742-1992
Name: Charles M Sholl
Probate Date: 9 Mar 1859
Probate Place: Chatham, Georgia, USA
Inferred Death Year: Abt 1859
Inferred Death Place: Georgia, USA
Item Description: Guardian Bonds, 1845-1874

This is NOT the death of Charles M Sholl, as it appears.
It's a bond for 500 dollars, payable by Annie M Thomas, formerly Annie M Sholl, and Jane D Thomas, if Annie Thomas doesn't properly perform her duties as Guardian of her minor child Charles M Sholl.
The presumably deceased father's name isn't given.

I had tried sending it via a PM on GR, but it wouldn't load.

ArgyllGran Report 10 Sep 2016 20:19

If the unnamed father of Charles M Sholl was deceased, then he couldn't have been your Charles.

But it may just have been that he had scarpered, as you say, and Annie was left literally holding the baby. As she had reverted to her maiden name, it seems likely that he had left her.

I've also sent you that document.

Thanks ArgyllGran

Document copies downloaded OK :-)

The Immigration Indexes give Charles Sholl arriving in the US as 1856 so would seem to be another Charles Sholl marrying Annie Thomas in 1853 ?!

Thank you again for your help

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Sep 2016 13:43

The "immigration" record, I think is actually an oath of citizenship, so he must have arrived in the US before that.
It's another transcription of the naturalisation record posted earlier.

It's a record of "Date and port of arrival OR date and place oath of citizenship was sworn. "

If that's your Charles marrying Annie, then the 1860 US census which I posted yesterday at 11:46 might be right after all.
