Hi Hendrik! I am researching Martha Maria Vermeulen who lived in Observatory, Cape Town and in 1954 married Roderick Read Atkinson. I wonder if Martha Maria was part of your extended family, and would be very interested to hear if you can please give me any pointers as to how I further research Martha Maria's family tree. Now that has gone out of business, there doesn't seem to be any good central database of South African genealogy. I'd be grateful for any assistance you may be able to give me. Best wishes,Paul

Jan (Willemzoon) Vermeulen who arrived before 1680 from Utrecht in the Netherlands. He was a soldier in the service of the then Dutch East India Company. He got married to a Catharina Opklim who hailed from Bengale on 7 November 1694, they had six children. 2. Dirk (Corneliszoon) Vermeulen arrived in Cape Town on 9 August 1705 from Utrecht in the Netherlands. He was a chef in the service of the Dutch East India Company. He married a Jannetjie Hansen Rugtertroost the daughter of a freeman named Hans Rugtertroost and hailed from Ebervelt in Germany. They had two children.
