My father has a family tree of the MACHELL family, mostly based in the English Lake District where he was brought up himself. The name MACHELL on the tree goes back to a Saxon Landlord called MAUCHAEL. There is speculation that the name may be derived from the french "Mal Chien" meaning "Bad Dog", or even the latin "Mallus Catullus" meaning the same, and this is even more curious because the family crest features three greyhound-type dogs in it.
