Kevin, the only thing I can suggest is getting a copy of his death certificate to see what it says. I've had a look in the newspaper archives to see if there was a report but can't see anything. At the age of 93 it would be hard to say.

I'm still looking for clues as to why most census give his birthplace as Croydon when he was born Brighton, perhaps he lived there for a while when small and thought that's where he was born - most people then didn't have their birth certificates to check the details!

Annslow Matilda's birthplace also varies between Tunbridge Wells on census and Frant, Sussex on the baptism - I checked and they're actually only 3 miles apart so that's OK.

Thank you, I will take a look at that. The other thing I would like to know is how can I find out if he committed suicide? I can't remember where I got the info from but I have him down as committing suicide. Hope you can help me with this. :)

Hi MarieCeleste,
Thanks for this info about Anslow, it seems to tie in with the year of death I have & also being dried at Southern Cemerery.
At the present moment, the lady that has been in touch with me can't give me anymore info until things are sorted. As soon as things have been done then she will be sending a copy of the tree.
If you happen to come across anymore info please feel free to get in touch.

Sorry, can't resist posting what I find - you can always compare with what the lady has.

This would be worth checking out:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915

Name: George Bates Stevens
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1844
Registration district: Brighton
Inferred County: Sussex

Kevin, that lady is probably on to something.

If you look at the 1911 census I posted on the first page his name was transcribed as George Baker Stevens - I've just had a look at the original image and the middle name is definitely Bates.

The form was completed by a Thurston Bird of 11 East Road.

Do let us know what the outcome is.
