Hi All,
I know this may be boring now, but i would love to gain death info regarding George Durrell,my gt gt grandfarther who has become a complete mystery to me
It has been brought to my attention that he could have been a Freemason so wondered if there were any masons who could check in the London archives from roughly 1853 till his unknown passing,to see if this is the case as he was a brickmaker from Portsea and i believe this would have been a trade where ecceptance was top of the list.
Hope you can help,
G Ford.

Glenn, I recently read part of the diary of a vicar from the late 19th century.

In it, he recorded a surprising number of burials of unidentified bodies - people who were perhaps further afield than their normal home area and had been involved in an accident or some other sudden death. People may have taken ill and died suddenly in woods, a field, river or whatever. Bearing in mind that people back then wouldn't be carrying driving licences, credit cards, or other ID etc and with communication back then not being what it is now it's easy to see how it could possibly happen.

I always bear this in mind when unable to find a death.

Dear Friends,
a couple of bits that have come my way .
I am told that on the 1861 census when George is living with his farther his wife Mary Durrell is a visitor at her uncle John Jacksons home,John Jackson sister is Charlotte Jackson my gt gt gt grandmother.John has a daughter who marries Alfred Smith who... is wait for it... a ships steward,so my George`s cousin`s hubby is a ships steward and Georges wife is visiting him.
Can this be confirmed.

Also there is also possibility that George could have emigrated to OZ and became a chief steward on the Alexandra Ship.
There is a lot of to-ing and fro-ing on the ship from Adelaide and other ports in Oz to Sydney from 1871 through to 1890.Mrs G DURRELL arrives in sydney in 1884 It was well documented i am told that men left there wife's to seek a better life abroad and the wife Joined years later

Can anyone confirm.
Yours in success
Glenn

Hi Astra,thankyou.
I will keep this as a reference so i don`t go over old ground.
I know it might sound daft but if you get a moment can you look for me to see when Thomas Owen re-appeared on the census forms after his death, because it was brought to my attention that it`s possible that george could have taken his name.I have to look at every option.
So gratefull for your time and help.
Yours in success
Glenn Ford.

I think, with the greatest of respect Glenn that we proved before that it was Dunell.

The name appears to be Dunell and not Durrell unfortunately.

Mary A. Dunell
Age: 40
Estimated birth year: abt 1841

Someone has made an alteration to the 1891 so it would appear that the name is definitely Dunell and Find my Past have transcribed it wrongly in 1871. On Ancestry in 1871 it is Dunell and reads as such on the original

PM from Glenn:

Yes i believe this to be correct. It is her farther whom i`m trying to trace.

Yes, I realise that, Glenn, but sometimes it helps to look at other members of the family.

If Mary Ann Lee is Charlotte's mother, she must have only been 15/16 when she was born, so very young to have married - not impossible then - and she is shown just as Mary in the marriage index.

Hi Glenn
I thought from previous research that the George in Jersey was in fact called Dunell and not Durrell.
It's on one of your many previous threads about George.
