Thank you for these replys.

In pencil, in the front of the bible, which I can barely make out are entries 'Gnr Gibbs' which I take to mean Gunner Gibbs, so he served in the 1st World War. Also are the initials 'E D R A E...' (I can't read the full E... details) Do you think this is a regiment name?

There are several Charles Gibbs medal cards on An****ry but of course no service or pension records to check against. There are also a few C Gibbs RFA KIA on the Commonwealth W G site.

Some St Judes records are on line, but not for 1897, that I have been able to find, to date.

If confirmed at age 14/15, then birth 1881/1884.

Is this St Jude's?

I have a small bible left in my mothers' effects belonging to

Charles Gibbs from

Mr Croxford

with the message 'with best love and wishes' dated Sept 1897.

I'd appreciate any help with the connection.

(updated)

I have now traced the William George Croxford of Amhurst Road, Hackney concerned (writing and 1911 census match). Croxford was a Sunday School participant at St Judes, Mildmay Park, Hackney/Islington.

Any matches to Charles Gibbs gratefully received. I have now considered that this bible is a confirmation bible so this Charles Gibbs could have been born around 1883-1886. I have not been able to locate one C Gibbs in the 1891, 1901 or 1911 around the parish of St Judes.
