Trying to find Livingstone

I am trying to trace the Scottish origins of my great-great-great grandfather John Livingstone (or Levingston), born in 1770, who came to England after 1798 to work on the Peak Forest Canal, and settled in the Stockport area of Cheshire. From John to the present day there has been a tradition in the family that John calls his eldest son Daniel, then Daniel calls his eldest son John, etc. The original John also had a daughter called Leah.
