I am new to all this so would be very greatfull for any hints as to how to find out about my late father inlaw's, birth mother. He was born Ernest James (Jim) MILEHAM (August 1924, I think) He was registered quite a while later in Hertfordshire. His Mother was Gertrude May MILEHAM formerly GATWARD. The Father section on his birth certificate was blank. Would I be safe to presume he was born out of wedlock and his Father impossible to trace? Also when a certificate says formerly instead of nee does this mean her name was changed but not by marriage? His early life was spent in a Dr Barnardo's childrens home. He was later fostered/adopted and only found out this was the case as an adult. I am in the process of requesting the release of his adoption files from Dr Barnardos, but I know this can take years. I would be very greatfull for any help specific or general to help me find out about this side of my family.
