Hi Andrea I started by finding my parents wedding certificate at the local records office which shows their parents name and occupation and then working back from there, also visiting there graves can be useful as families were buried together I’ve found names on head stones I knew nothing about, I’ve been lucky so far as my family have all lived in the Nottingham area. good luck if I can be of any more help don't hesitate to contact me...
