Hi Kerry Sorry no luck finding William's death in NSW or Victoria. Is it possible he changed his name? Good luck Cherilyn

Kerry Report 25 May 2007 13:18

Cherilyn, thank you for the offer of a lookup. I am looking for William Burr born 30/06/1881 Aberdeen, Scotland his parents were Robert and Helen (Burnett). He married Jessie McHattie in 1902 (they had 4 children that we know of) and then he left for Australia. He never sent for his family to join him but we know he died c1940's/1950's as his wife was informed that he had been killed (we think in a car accident). Not sure what year he went to Australia (between 1910-16). He joined the Austalian army in 1916 (and was also discharged the same year). NSW would be the area. thanks, Kerry

Hi Geoff Here are the births, the son died as a baby (Note: he was born late in 1886 so this does fit). Can't see any others born in Victoria. Surname: MEYERS Given Names: Herbert Clyde Event: B Father: Herbert Henry Mother: Jessie Amy WOODLEY Birth Place: RUSH Year: 1887 Reg Number: 6349 Surname: MEYERS Given Names: Herbt Clyde Event: D Father: Herbt Hy Mother: Jessie Amy WOODLEY Age: 3M Death Place: RWORTH Year: 1887 Reg Number: 8125 Surname: MEYERS Given Names: Flor Irene Event: B Father: Herbert Henry Mother: Jessie Amy WOODLEY Birth Place: MELB Year: 1888 Reg Number: 13514 Florence married in Woollahra, NSW in 1913 to Leslie GINN (reg 9962). Eldest daughter Marion also married in NSW, in Sydney in 1908, to George A LEECH (9822). They had a son named Max who died in 1914 in Ashfield (15752). Cannot find deaths for Geo or Marion in NSW or Vic. Possible deaths for Jessie in NSW: Jessie Amy in 1944, dau of John & Emily Louise (reg 15528) Jessie A in 1919, dau of Henry and Helen (3325) No luck with Herbert's death, sorry. Hope this helps. Cheers Cherilyn

Hi Cherilyn Thanks for your help. I will have a look at the NAA site you have kindly suggested - I wasn't sure how much info there would actually be on Donald, as you say he wasn't there long, but I'll keep searching. Kind regards Martin

Tox Just a bit extra - the Home of the Good Shepherd, Wm's sister's address in his military record, was a Catholic-based industrial school for girls, established in 1908 (or 1904 - there is conflicting info) for children who were wards of the state or classed as 'delinquents'. Basically, the children were made to do industrial-scale laundry. There is a good chance his other sister(s) was/were there too. It closed in 1979. The Good Shepherd is still in existence though and I have a current contact address if you are interested. Cheers Cherilyn

Hi Tox What an interesting one this turned out to be! The death date you have for William Gregory FITZGERALD of 12 Feb 1962 is correct; he was aged 67 and death place was Leederville WA. I am pretty certain I have his birth as 'Willie' in Fremantle in 1895 (reg 1464), mother Helena Fitzgerald, father not stated. He had 3 sisters: Helena born in 1897 (reg 728), Amy born in 1898 (reg 1151) and Teresa born in 1899 (reg 2085), all in Fremantle and all with father not stated. Also a brother Herbert born in 1898 (reg 1958); he died at 12 weeks in 1899 (reg 770). There were also stillborn twins in 1900, a boy and a girl (reg 1011 and 1012), again Fremantle, father not stated. Wm enlisted in WWI on July 21, 1915 aged 20, born Fremantle, occupation dairyman. Next of kin was originally mother Helena of Osborne Park, then father Joseph, address unknown, and then sister Amy FITZGERALD, c/- Home of the Good Shepherd, Leederville. Wm had black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion, 137lbs, 5' 4 and 3/4' tall, and was Roman Catholic. He was a gunner and was wounded in action in France in Nov 1917 and again in 1918 (gassed). He was invalided to England in August and not discharged from hospital and returned to Australia until March 1919. According to his papers, his right leg was amputated. There is a marriage in his file to Elsie MALKIN on 16 Jan 1919; her address is shown as 34 Bridge Place, Worksop, Nottingham; she was 23 and a spinster, her father is shown as Frances Austin MALKIN. He is also 23 and his father is shown as William FITZGERALD, coal carter. His address is shown as both the Bridge Place address and 239 Murray St, Perth, WA. The marriage took place at the Register Office in Worksop (ref 67). I guess you have that already. There is a possible 2nd marriage for him in Perth in 1923 to Phyllis Marjorie CUMMING (reg 513). She was born in Subiaco WA in 1903 to Gordon Walter James CUMMING and Emily Eliza MCOUAT (5844), and died in Warwick aged 80 on 14 Sept 1983. Gordon & Emily married in Fremantle in 1899 (680); Gordon died in 1948 aged 73 in Perth and Emily in 1930 aged 56 in Mt Lawley. I think I have a marriage for his mother Helena FITZGERALD to Alexander FRANCIS in 1918 (reg 269); she died as Helena FRANCIS in Perth on 15 Oct 1932 aged 54 and is buried in the Roman Catholic section of Karrakatta cemetery (IA171) with her husband Alexander, who died on 26 Jun 1954 in Nedlands aged 83. Hope this all makes sense and fits ...! It is quite a tale! Cheers Cherilyn

Hi Martin Thanks for your message. I think you have actually managed to find quite a bit on Donald really! ;-) The Battye Library at the WA State Library may be able to locate him in the 1925 telephone directory, but it won't tell you anything you don't already know (his address). You can order a copy of the passenger list for the Moreton Bay at http://www*naa*gov*au/The_collection/recordsearch.html Search as a guest, type in keywords Fremantle Moreton Bay and the date 1926. You will get quite a few hits; about 2 thirds of the way down the first page is one which mentions the passgenger index for the Moreton Bay departing Fremantle 22 April 1926. Click on the hyperlinked control symbol (302). From there, click 'request copy'. Voila. :-) Again it will really only confirm what you already have...not sure what extra info you are seeking, since he wasn't here very long. Good luck! Cherilyn

Hi Cherilyn I wonder if you could help shed some light on my great great Uncle, a Donald Kennedy, who was born on the Isle of Skye in 1860s. We think he emmigrtaed to WA, in 1924/5, but after a year or so he wanted to return back to Skye. I have an old newspaper clipping dated 1926, in which it tells of his mysterious disappearance (presume lost overbaord) on the SS Moreton Bay, 4 days into his return journey from Fremantle to Skye, in April 1926. We have no other details of when he first arrived in WA, but we did find out from a letter he wrote that he lived at 21 Union Street, Subiaco, W.A. It would be great if you could locate him anywhere in the records available to you Cherilyn. I've not had any success in locating him any where. Kind regards Martin Kennedy

Thanks Cherilyn, Sorry to have confused things with they error of 1972, you were correct I did mean 1872. Mary Ryan is the mother of George Mark & Elizabeth Bridget, Mary would have been aged about 31 & 38 when they were born. George Maine would have been about 60 & 67 at the time of their birth. I have 10 children for George Maine from 1853 - 1892 a span of 39 years. I suspect Pollard is a first marriage for Mary Ryan. Thank you for doing the lookup for me, is very much appreciated. Kathy

Hi Cherilyn, Thank you once again for checking out details. Maybe they never had any children. Qld BDMs are now on-line but only up to 1914. At a later time they will be adding info up to 1929. Maybe I will find children then, unless I make a trip to the Library in the meantime. Cheers, Fran :)

Hi Fran Sorry, no luck at all with this one... Maybe try www*raogk*org Good luck Cherilyn ________________________________________ Hi Kathy There is a marriage in 1884 to Mary Pollard and it is definitely to George Maine EVANS (reg B008762) but I can't see the 1885 one. There IS the birth of 2 children in 1885 and 1892 to George Maine EVANS and Mary RYAN though (George Mark & Eliz Bridget). Can't see a marriage between a Mary RYAN and ? POLLARD.... could have been in UK. However, there is a death in Brisbane in 1898 for a Mary EVANS with father Michal RYAN and mother Bridget HORRIGAN. (Found Bridget RYAN's death in 1891, dau of Michael HORRIGAN and Margaret McMAHON). Could this be the marriage of George Maine jnr (if there was one)? I know men can father children until late in life (my husband's ggg grandfather was 68 when his youngest was born!) but seems more likely to me that this was George's son (especially since his wife died some years after 1884). *just realised you must mean Hester died in 1872 not 1972 (which would mean she was 140 when she died!!!)* What do you think? The only way to be sure would be to order the 1884 marriage certificate, or George's death cert (he died in 1910, son of William & Esther, aged 87, reg C001791). Cheers Cherilyn

I hope your kind offer is still open. I am looking to confirm a marriage in Queensland, possibly the Ipswich area. George Maine Evans b 1825c married Hester Priddle in 1850 Somerset, England. Hester died in 1972 Qld, I have a possible second marriage to Mary Pollard, Feb 1884. Also a marriage to Mary Ryan, Aug 1885. My dates could be out, and I have considered the possibiltiy that Mary Pollard & Mary Ryan are the same person. Can you possibly confirm for me. Thanks in advance. Kathy

Hi Cherilyn, Once again I am requesting your help please. WYNNE, William Cardinal was married to an Isabella. I have seen her name of WWI Service Records as Isa, Isobel and Isabella. I have no idea of her surname as I cannot find a marriage for them in Qld. However they moved to Victoria sometime between 1917 and 1920. Would appreciate if you could find any birth of children around this time for William & Isabella Wynne. William died in NSW but I could not find a death for Isabella so possibly she died in Victoria. Thanks again for any info you may be able to supply. Regard, Fran Wynne

Hi Raymond I don't have SA bdms but there are several COTTRELLs with SA connections on RecordSearch NAA. Orroroo and Maitland seem prevalent, along with Adelaide, Quorn, and Woodville. You can check these out yourself by searching COTTRELL SA at www*naa*gov*au/The_collection/recordsearch.html Good luck...(Kerri Young does SA lookups on this board, not sure if her thread is active). Cheers Cherilyn Hi Sue Sorry, I can't help with a will, not even sure if a will so 'recent' would be publicly available. Maybe you could try emailing the Battye Library (State LIbrary WA) and ask if they know. Cheers Cherilyn

Hi Cherilyn, Sorry if this is not really your area, but am wondering if you might know where I might search for a Western Australian will? My great-grandfather died in Albany around 1951 and I am hoping to get a copy of his will. Cheers and thanks (again!) for your help. Sue
