If Moses was given his mother's surname at birth, it is extremely unlikely that the father would have been named. There are two possible birth reg'ns......the cert would confirm Name: Moses Bate Year of Registration: 1873 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: West Bromwich County: Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire Volume: 6b Page: 814 Name: Moses Bate Year of Registration: 1874 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Penkridge County: Staffordshire Volume: 6b Page: 499 Checking genuki, the second one would appear to be the one you want................ PENKRIDGE REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : Staffordshire. Created : 1.7.1837. Abolished : 1.4.1877 (succeeded by Cannock district). Sub-districts : Brewood; Cannock; Penkridge. GRO volumes : XVII (1837-51); 6b (1852-77). Parishes in Staffordshire (1837-77): Acton Trussell and Bednall, Brewood, Bushbury, Cannock, Cheslyn Hay, Church Eaton, Coppenhall, Dunston, Essington, Featherstone, Great Wyrley, Hatherton, Hilton, Huntington, Kinvaston, Lapley, Norton Canes, Penkridge, Saredon, Shareshill, Stretton, Teddesley Hay. hiya annette, have been reading the info on the thread, found the 1881 cen as on the thread, you do realise that sarah was unmarried? now it may be that the lodger was the father,(charles), even if you order a birth cert, it doesnt mean that the fathers name will be there, dont want to be the prophet of doom and gloom, just didnt know if you'd noticed, sorry Julie
