hi zoe, heres one to really get your teeth into, ive tried every way poss with no luck and believe me its cost me a fortune. my grandfather was born out of wedlock in feb 1915 to a very youngunmarried mother age we believe to be 16, his mother ella was a maid/domestic, she reg his birth at the end of feb 1915, he was then adopted by an assistent midwife and her hus, by the name of goodlass and brought up as their son although he kept the name his birth mother had given him(he was born in toxteth park liverpool . ive had several searches done by researchers in liverpool and have looked everywhere for clues from ancestry to 1837 and inbetween. ive got his birth certificate witch states he was born at a house in toxteth park owned by a nurse the address being 17 beaconsfield rd toxteth park, his mothers name was ella mcdonald, and he was named ronald mcdonald, after his adoption his name was ronald mcdonald goodlass, ive looked everywhere for his mother and she seams to have vanished after he was adopted. suexx

Laura By the look of the 1901 census the children being stepchildren to the head means they were Fredk stepchildren meaning they are his wifes from a previous relationship. Have you found the marriage cert to Fredk if she was married she would have been married in that name. Possible marriage Marriages Dec 1900 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Williams Frederick Edmonton 3a 828 EDMONTON REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : Middlesex. Zoe, Perhaps could you help me please? I've tried to find family in the 1881 census, failed, and then asked someone else to try on here and they couldn't either. This is what was on the 1901and should be on the 1881 Thomas W Day abt 1876 Poplar, Middlesex, England (son) Leyton Essex Esther Day abt 1853 Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England Wife Leyton Essex Myra E Day abt 1879 Poplar, Middlesex, England Daughter Leyton Essex Thomas W Day abt 1851 Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England Head Leyton Essex 'SHOWMAN and exhib' Leyton is now counted as London - Waltham Forest area. Thomas was apparantly a punch and judy man, so moved around a bit maybe ??? Please could you see if you could find them in 81 or 91? Thanks very much

Hi Zoe Thanks for your offer. My Great Great Grandfather, George Embelton (born c1830) left England (possibly from Plymouth) and came to Australia, not sure when but was in Ballarat, Vic in 1854 as he was involved in the miners dispute (Eureka Stockade). The surname spelling may have been changed from Embleton and there is some family talk that it may have been Hamilton. His descendants resided in the Newcastle, NSW area. His ancestry is a real mystery. Regards........Lyne

Hi Zoe, thanks for the offer. my mystery is William Wallis born 1843 in Portsea,he's on the 1851,1861 and 1901 census but not on 71,81 or 91. he had a son called Ambrose born 1872 in Clifton,Bristol and on the birth cert it states mothers name as Sarah Young. I can't find a marriage for William and Sarah and by 1881 Ambrose is back in Portsmouth living with one of Williams sisters,no sign of William or Sarah. i've searched for all different variation of the surname(walliss on birth cert and Wallace on 1901 census) William was a hawker/costermonger any ideas would be great thanks Karen

John Now Martha can sometimes be known as Mary best thing to do it order one of the childrens birth certs to get her maiden name as I have Richard with Mary in 1851 Ok So is this him in 1851 Head is a Engine man John Nicholas abt 1843 Beerferris, Devon, England Son Beerferris Devon Mary Nicholas abt 1818 St Blazey, Cornwall, England Wife Beerferris Devon Richard Nicholas abt 1816 Calstock, Cornwall, England Head Beerferris Devon Richard Nicholas abt 1847 Beerferris, Devon, England Son Beerferris Devon and the year and place Mary was born match in the 1851 and 1871 1871 Head is a Engine Driver Eliza Nicholas abt 1852 Beer Ferris, Devon, England Daughter Calstock Cornwall Ellen Nicholas abt 1857 Calstock, Cornwall, England Daughter Calstock Cornwall Francis Nicholas abt 1857 Calstock, Cornwall, England Son Calstock Cornwall Grace Nicholas abt 1843 St Austell, Cornwall, England Daughter Calstock Cornwall John Nicholas abt 1850 Beer Ferris, Devon, England Son Calstock Cornwall Laura Nicholas abt 1854 Calstock, Cornwall, England Daughter Calstock Cornwall Mary Nicholas abt 1819 St Blazey, Cornwall, England Wife Calstock Cornwall Richard Nicholas abt 1847 Beer Ferris, Devon, England Son Calstock Cornwall Richard Wm Nicholas abt 1816 Calstock, Cornwall, England Head Calstock Cornwall Selina Nicholas abt 1855 Calstock, Cornwall, England Daughter Calstock Cornwall Thomas Nicholas abt 1862 Calstock, Cornwall, England Son Calstock Cornwall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now this is poss them in 1841 Head is a engineer All born in county John Cornelius abt 1776 Cornwall, England St Austell Cornwall Widow Mary Nicholas abt 1821 Cornwall, England St Austell Cornwall Mary Nicholas abt 1840 Cornwall, England St Austell Cornwall 8months old Richard Nicholas abt 1816 Cornwall, England St Austell Cornwall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This does look like you man according to IGI ~NOT SUBMITTED ENTRY PARISH ENTRY MARY NICHOLAS Female -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: 23 MAY 1841 Saint Austell, Cornwall, England -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: RICHARD WILLIAMS NICHOLAS Mother: MARY 2 other 1. GRACE NICHOLAS - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 04 DEC 1842 Saint Austell, Cornwall, England **now they do have a Grace with them in 1871 census As I said you will be best of getting a birth cert of one of the children to confirm her maiden name then we may be able to find a marriage. Do you have the 1861 census details at all as it looks like the same Mary to me.~in 1851 and 1871 so it doesn't look like he remarried abt 61 just asking where did you get that info? Zo

Hi Zoe Please could you see if you could find a marriage between Frederick Hiram Loveday and May Fordham Please? I have no date but would have a rough estimate of 1899 onwards. Would be very grateful for any help.Unfortunately I have no idea of the area they were married. Kathryn

Zoe Report 21 Apr 2006 14:02

Lynette Do you possibly have a fathers name from a marriage cert or some other info as there are 3 George Embletons born 1830+/- 2 in 1841. The area you say he may have been from there are none in that area. Why don't you try to get a passenger list lookup you may find out when he left & maybe some others of his family left also! With so little info it's very hard to know you have the right one. If you get any more info please do get back to me Zoe

Amanda Was your grandad the first born? I have looked through the marriage records for 1915-1919 with the exception of 2nd quarter 1915 and 3rd quarter 1918(as these were not on Ancestry)! When you say you have searched BMD do you mean free BMD or have you looked through the pages of the GRO records If you have not done the latter I would suggest going to Ancestry and searching their BETA BMD link is on homepage of ancestry just below search box to the right it should be highighted in Blue. I would say search from 1911-1915 and see if you find anything, I was doing the lookup with the Steeden name~ but if she was married before she would have a different surname, so she would only have been 16/17 in 1911 so if you search from there onwards hopefully you should find her, if not try after 1919~ as I have already looked upto this point. If you have any probs just ask and I will help Zoe
