Dear Sam Any chance you can have a look for Flaherty and Goater in Bolton, Lancs more towards 1920 - I think should be a confectioners or a greengrocers. Also could you have a look for Nos. 7 - 9 Ashton Court, Bolton for Goater and McGreaves. I am particularly interested in 1908 when two next door neighbours got married. Does the directory tell you whereabouts the streets are? Ashton Court doesn't exist in modern Bolton so I'd love to know where it was! Many thanks. Best wishes Maria Parkinson

Samuel thanks for your kind offer. Could you please look up the address: 93 Blackman St, Borough, Southwark - 1884 onwards I have my family listed there from 1841 to 1881, Henry Marks died in 1884 as thats when i thnk the rest of the family moved because on the 1891 census they are listed at 18 Buckingham St, Southwark. Just a note; i did find a directory listing for 1841 and although it was under BLACKMAN ST, number 93 was listed under LANT ST which is a small street off blackman street. i really just want to know who moved in after Henry died in 1884 incase it was another member of the Marks family? I hope this is ok, many thanks Annie

Ian Report 23 Nov 2005 12:50

Thank you for the offer Sam. The relatives who have eluded me are one family. From 1848-51 they are in Northumberland: David Turnbull married Frances Middleton in Newcastle in 1848. They were supposedly of this parish. In the 1851 census they're with her parents at the Wallsend railway station master's house. From 1853-56 they went to the West Indies I am pretty certain, and in 1860-61 they're back at Newcastle, only under the surname of Stewart. (David & Frances Stewart & children) the 1861 census has them at Elswick. Then by 1863 it was Jesmond & then off to Bombay, India after that. That's according to family notes. What I can't figure, is about when the name change happened, and I feel a look at any directories for the Newcastle area for 1857/8/9/60 might help work it out.- either David Stewart or David Turnbull. His profession was a sugar planter at the time of his wedding in 1848, & an engineer/ship owner/inventor & racehorse owner by 1860-61. I have not been able to locate him in any directories I have been able to get hold of in any year at all. His father was named David Turnbull, also, and he was a ships carpenter or a shipwright, and I think he died circa 1865 in Newcastle. Thanks again for the offer- best wishes!
