Hello Jess, I have been tracing the footsteps of John Potter b 1831 in Pocklington E York but, so far unable to locate in 1861 census. He would have been married by that time to Olive Brightwell in 1856 in St Mary Lambeth but I am unsure where he would have been living. My guess is either Middlesex or Yorkshire. His mother was Ellen Potter but either she was unmarried or I have not found his father as yet. Many thanks Diana

Hi Jess - Thanks for the offer. I have Thomas Bushell b. 1801 wife Mary and family living Halsall, Lancs on 1841 census, living Stannaught Bldgs, Liverpool 1851 census but have no trace after that. Amongst the above family is son Nathan b. 1836 who married Margaret Porter in 1855 in Liverpool. I have lost track of both these two families in 1861. By 1871 Nathan and Margaret have moved to Jarrow, Co Durham and I have them there. Thomas & Mary I imagine could have died by 1871. Are you able to trace either/both these families in 1861 ? I would be most grateful for any help you can give. Thanks again

Jess - thank you for that. It confirms what I already had re Nathan and Margaret's family in 1871. From the dates and places of births of the children, it seems that they were still in Liverpool up until 1870 when youngest child William born. Are you able to trace them on the 1861 or Nathan's parents Thomas and Mary in Liverpool? I would be happy if you could possibly trace them, but don't worry if you can't. Thanks again, Margaret

Looby - I am a little irritated yes. You asked for look up before 1881, which is what i have done. Not done 1901 yet but working on it -it does take time- have spent about an hour on it as you can see. You made it so hard for me, by just posting surnames, no christain names i had to look all that up (for reference) myself- you had that info but didnt volunteer it YOU seem irritated that i needed all the info in order to do what you asked me to! as the very first thing i looked up WAS the wrong family it does go to show that it is the detail that makes the look up sucessful

Thanks Jess, I really appreciate your time. John is my GG Grandfather. I was over the moon when i found him but have had no luck in 1861 or 1851. Still a bit of a dead end tho as he has no father listed on IGI. I sent off for the original baptism transcript to see if the father is on there. I await with bated breath ! :-) Diana
