Here's my starter !! People who reply to a lookup request with a curt 'message sent off list' post. Supremely unhelpful to anyone else prepared to do the lookup and (in my case) guaranteed to ensure I ignore the original request.

As Rosemary say's People who do-not reply to information/advice offered, even if it is incorrect a acknowledgment would be appreciated! Tracy x

People who don't give the county where a town or village is. I spend more time looking places up on Multi-map, then I do on the actual look-up. Kath. x

The reply that says 'I have e-mailed you.' I'm never sure if it means 'I have found everything you were looking for (and more besides) and everyone else can stop looking as they are now wasting their time.' or 'I've found your John on the 1881 census, but none of his family on any census, I cannot find any of their births/deaths/marriages on any of the indexes so I hope that someone else can find them for you.'

I am afraid I might of been guilty of the 'I have e-mailed you direct with the information,' although I do usually put from BIVR index as that is all I have got. But please forgive me if I didn't, will try and remember in future. Maureen

Sam Report 25 Mar 2005 20:20

When I have posted a reply to a thread, asking for more info and the poster replies by message direct to me, rather than to the thread. 1. Usually its that long since I asked for info and I have helped more poeple so I have no idea who they are or what they are on about 2. It doesn't help anyone else looking at the thread as they will only have to ask for the same info before they can help. PLEASE - reply on the thread! Sam

Jools, You've helped me in the past and I am truly grateful for yours and others help. It must be frustrating when you so freely give your time and people don't reply etc. Don't let the *******s grind you down - you are appreciated! Christine

I'm with Jools & Geof ... it is SOOOO annoying when someone replies with ' I've emailed you' at least let the rest of us know what you have or haven't found ! The other one, which for me is the worse .... when the requester sends a message direct ... especially if its NOT the same day they posted ! I haven't got a CLUE as to what they are referring to, I've done other searches since then ! If I DO happen to know what they are referring to, then I just cut and paste the info onto the boards anyway, so everyone can see 'the latest' ! Apart from that, my PC crashes everytime I get a message ... its SOOOO annoying unless its a friendly 'hi/hello' from a regular contact ! Elaine :-)

I am more than grateful for the help people have given me. I asked for help when I first started on the site not realizing that I could get a lot of census info. on Ancestry. When I realized, I registered. The people who have helped me on this board have opened many doors for me. One person, yesterday, gave me my great great great grandmother without realizing what she had done. It is hard to find words to express how you feel at times without gushing. I may be slow in answering because of the time difference, I am in Australia. If I have irritated anyone or appeared ungrateful I apologize. Keep up the good work, it is nice to know that there are people who help just because they want to. Susan

No names, no pack drill, but I've just read a request on a thread offering lookups for 3 specific counties - and the request is for a completely different county! For goodness sake - can't people read??? Ellen.

Helen Report 25 Mar 2005 22:08

Apart from every irritation already mentioned, my pet hate has got to be the fact that so many people have never and will never read a very basic Family History book - free on loan from their local Library. Helen K

Smiley Report 25 Mar 2005 23:01

When a request for census or BMD help is posted with hardly any information to get us started. So the first half a dozen replies are questions from those trying to help. Where was he born.. Where have you already looked.. What censuses DO you have them on.. Sometimes it's like trying to get blood out of a stone! Ooh... another one ''Can someone please help me find my ggreat uncle Joe Bloggs, I've looked EVERYWHERE.'' but in reality thay probably haven't looked anywhere!

Jools

Jools Report 25 Mar 2005 23:09

Smiley Sammy - haven't you found that EVERYWHERE website yet????? It's probably www(.)everywhere(.)info - and probably says they can't be found - as in 'file not found' BTW - just decided I've another irritation (apart from 2 week old members throwing the teddy out of the cot when told to grow up by those of long standing) - people who 'personalise' their posting name with so many with squares, lines, hearts, flowers and kitchen sinks that it's impossible to work out who they are or what they're called. ;)) Jools

People that expect to find their entire tree using other people's paid-for subscriptions. People that ask for a look up then when you send them the info they say 'oh yeah, that wasn't my family after all', even though they know you were looking for them. People that insist their tree goes back to 900 AD even though you have the certificates to prove they've cocked it up in 1897...and even worse, they then send copies of the rubbish to other people knowing it's wrong. People that moan. Boy I needed that! thanks! Julie
