Nell, thanks so much for that info re Sol O'Mon. I could have spent a fortune looking for him and not realising I should transfer my search from the middle east to Craggy Island.

Alan I don't know where you live but if you are in England I'd be very suspicious of a gardener who claims to grow plums in April. Heather

Going back to Lola - wasnt she last seen as the sun set over Waterloo ? And the rumours about her putting in a thumb and pulling out a plum are allegedly groundless.

Alan I'm sorry, I know you are a kind person, but I think you will have to dismiss her immediately. Please remember to count the spoons before she leaves. one cannot be too careful. nell

Our head plum gardener has excelled himself this year in getting the first crop in so soon. As for the spoon, the assistant silver-service maid gave me the correct twelve knives for breakfast, but missed one of the forks so I had no choice. Alan

Mmmmfl mmnf. Sorry, you caught me with a mouthful of plums and I damn near swallowed the silver spoon I was eating them with. Yorkshire? I'd heard that there was an island just to the north of the Thames coast. Is that Yorkshire? Alan

Lyla I don't know, but I doubt if you will find any recordings of his mimes either on CD or vinyl! Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. nell

You see! The great thing about these boards is that we can all offer little snippets of information to aid research and then you get the bigger picture. I have a little more gen to add 1. The Kinks family came from Muswell Hill and were nicknamed the 'Muswell Hillbillies' possibly they had an ancestor called Billy, or William (quite a common name). 2. Both Tom Jones claim of 7 inches was refuted as just boasting. 3. Lola/Lyla/lila/Layla has also been identified as Lene Lovich/Marlene Dietrich/Lisa Minelli. There is a lot of academic research going on at the moment to see if all these are one person or several people. Marlene was a pavement artist and liked to perform underneath the lamplight by a barracks - as yet unidentified. 4. Sol O'Mon was a poet of Jewish/Irish extraction and a huge influence on James Joyce [who later became Joyce James after one of the first successful sex changes]. Hope this helps, folks. nell

Jeff You may be a triplet, but I do not think that you are an IDENTICAL triplet. Perhaps Marjorie could advise on this?

Geoff Report 11 Apr 2005 08:46

I was born on the same day as Ray Davis' little brother, David. Perhaps we were twins separated (by 120 miles) at birth. I was born just after midnight; perhaps we were triplets with Farrah Fawcett (or perhaps not).

I think I may have a connection to the Solomon mentioned earlier. Could you advise if he was a poet please? Also, my elderly aunt has told me that there was a large amount of gold in the family which went missing c1000 BC. If anyone has any business directories for Canaan about that time I would be most grateful.

An old one this................... When are GC going to sort out the problem of no dates appearing when people upload gedcoms? Their software doesn't allow for baptism dates so when you check for matching names you get no dates. It would help a bit if people entered a place of birth, though, even if it's only the place of baptism it could help make matches. Re Samson/Lola I believe there was some early experimental surgery around that time, which could account for the gender confusion. I think we're on to something with the Jones connection as a possible descendant, Indiana, has done some extensive research in the area and discovered some interesting artifacts. Gwynne

Nell My family tree software allowed for incest. I couldn't think what to do on my computer project at college, so designed a family history program. Unfortunately, my logic has never been too good and it had one or two little flaws..... My poor great grandmother was trapped in a loop, marrying her father for all eternity!

Lyla You know it's odd that you should say that you often get the name 'Lola' when searching disc's! I believe there is a deffinate connection with Lola and Thomas Jones. You see a Ray Davis also recorded many things about a 'Lola' on to 7inch black disc too and like Thomas he made lots of money in doing so! However Ray was also known by the strange name of 'The Kinks.' If im correct they were a very well known family in the c60's however they popped up now and then in the c80's too! Just thought I would advice you not to disgard the 'Lola's that keep appearing on the disc you search, yes they could be mis-transcribed, but they do seem to be connected some how! Tracy x Ps Important update. It is still not known 100% what 'Lola's' gender was, so this could prove to make any research much more difficult for you. Sorry, I have only just thought to inform you of that important info! Tracy x

Lyla I believe I came across the Delilah you are refering to some years ago! (dont think she was a hairdresser though, more of a teaser/tormentor). Any way if I remember correctly she was deffinately connected to a Jones family, in fact it was a Thomas Jones late c60s/70 also known as Tom. He recorded a lot of info about Delilah onto a 7inch black plastic disc. The public went crazy for a copy of the disc, which was sold in various 'record' stores through out the country! Apparently this helped make him a very rich man, so you should find he is easy to locate! (could be indexed in the guiness book of black 7inch disc's too) Just a thought! I believe Tom was really fed up with Delilah always laughing at him, so he took a knife, and she laughed no more. So you could also check out the 'old Bailey site too'! Good luck in your searches! Tracy x

Marjorie Well eliminating some of those 44 children from your tree must have been a relief! I've found a relative on the IGI whose wife was also his mother. No, it wasn't Oedipus AND Jocasta! Not sure if any family tree software allows for that! nell

Keith Thankyou for saying you don't find me arrogant! As for my family tree going back 800 years, erm, well, all it needs is proof, if you see what I mean! And I am firmly on the side of the 'turn the pooter off' school of research. Yes, you can do a lot on here but sooner or later, you HAVE to go and look at original docs. Pre - 1837, you are lucky to find anything on line, very few Parish Records on line. My personal experience with the IGI is that entries are an interesting clue, nothing more. I have only ever found one entry that was completely accurate, most have been wrong in a greater or lesser degree, particularly the ones baptising my rellies in a Chapel that wasnt built until 70 years after their birth (no, they were newborns, not late baptisms). And as for the ones who were simply made up to fit the facts....my poor 3 x GGM, 44 children, some born before she was, some not till after her death...After a lot of intensive research with the Parish Registers, I found no less than seven family groups over a period of 40 years or so. Someone had obviously blindly copied every child born to the 'same' couple, without giving it any thought whatsoever, nor, I suspect, ever seeing the original register. I do hope the Grumpy Squad are all feeling better today, was it the weather, I would hate to see this thread go, its been keeping me entertained for weeks. Marjorie

Nell, You could be right. There is some evidence that Samson changed his appearance shortly before he disappeared. Gwynne

I think Samson was Sam's son, and possibly called something else. Unfortunately, some documents got destroyed when the building they were stored in was demolished. nell
