Someone posts request for help. Someone else responds offering that help and then yet another person jumps in asking the person who offered to do look-ups for them. Actually they hadn't offered look-ups in the first place. Cheek. Also, people who post offers of help but don't say EXACTLY what they're offering. Then they edit the heading later without saying they have done so and make people who have taken up the offer look stupid because what they want is NOT then included in the offer. Moan over Jan :-)

A thoroughly selfish and non GR moan. I got 72 hours free access to Origins. This is a selfish moan, because I've been largely doing my own lookups and not advertising the fact. Being Easter, it's been quick dive ins as the visitors don't appreciate me disappearing all the time. Today, I have a bit more time, like everyone else.... The site is really slow, I go in for a final polish off.... and discover I'm timed out! They are on GMT rather than BST. That'll teach me to work up to a deadline! I've sent a whingeing email, but I know it's my own fault really. Doh.

Is it just me or is anyone else having trouble with this site? I type a message or response to a thread and as soon as I press send or add message it disappears into space and I get a page not found message. This now happens that often I've stopped posting messages or contacting anyone. GR been no help! Rachel

Dave I haven't check Leviticus - is it near Accrington? There is a place a couple of miles away called LoveClough - perhaps you have a bad transcription.

Unknown Report 29 Mar 2005 11:04

I think the census for that period is really difficult to read. Bear in mind that the enumerators were working with clay tablets, but I think Leviticus isn't a place name, I think it is Ticus, Levi. I think he was the founder of the jeans company, but I haven't been able to track down the company archives. Of course much material was lost in the great flood and I think some of the papyrus rolls were eaten by locusts. nell

Geoff Report 29 Mar 2005 11:25

Ticus, Levi died shekkel-less, a pauper, owing to the reluctance of the men of his area to wear pink trousers. It was only much later, after Indigo Jones had invented a dark blue dye, that the trouser sales took off.

Dave Oh no! Are you sure your info is correct, I didnt know Adam had a first wife, oh blimey, how do I add her on to my GR tree, do I have to delete all Eve's descendants and start again? It took me several years to enter this tree, I am very cross. Do you have any source information please, so I can check this out, not that I don't believe you but I do like to check other people's research - any Primary Source docs, please?Or did you get this off AWT? Oh: Lot's wife? Pillar of salt? After looking at the image carefully, I think this is her birth-place - Billericay on Sea. Hope this helps.Lot had a lot of wives. Marjorie

Unknown Report 30 Mar 2005 01:36

Marjorie I had another look, I think it says Billie Ricky. Not sure if that's Lot's wife's real name, or whether it was Wilhelmina Richenda? Can't find her in the street directory, but there is a Bill 0'Rickay. Do you think he's related in some way? nell

I hope I am not too late for this thread. I have only ever made one request for help to someone who was offering look ups ( not one of you I hasten to add ). I did not receive a reply. As I only started on GR a few months ago I thought I must have done something wrong on the transmission so I asked whether or not they got my request. I got a curt response to the effect that they hadn't found anything and if they had they would have told me. Nevertheless I thanked them for their trouble. I wasn't going to try again but you lot have given me the faith to take the plunge. Regards to all Keith

Helen Yes, Bill O'Rickey (note the spelling please) is on my tree as number 74,120,319,742,057, for your information. (I find it helpful if we all use the same reference numbers - makes finding people so much easier, don't you think?) I am now wondering, incidentally, about Sarah, who was three score years and ten when she gave birth - has anyone else heard of a woman of this age giving birth? I cannot find her birth certificate but I am going to ask the GRO to do a search. Marjorie

ive just spent an hour reading through these irritations and moans, and agree that it must be very frustrating when people dont give you the right info when requesting a lookup, but please bear in mind that a lot of people on this site are new to geneology and dont really know what is expected of them ,i know that when i first started back in nov 2004 i didnt know where to start so i posted a thread asking for help, lots of people replyed telling me i could ask for anything any time and someone would help me(which they did) and i always sent a thank you back, and as for mailing direct whats the problem? lots of people have mailed me direct to thank me for helping them i really dont see what bugs some people about that, and to answer johns moan about some people never going to a records office to look up themselves, well im guilty of that one as my records office is 236miles away from my house so i can hardly pop out to do a look up, but i do agree that sometimes some people are rude and dont bother to thank the people who do the look ups, but there doesnt seem to be to many of them, some people just forget or cant find the thread, so please all of you experts dont be to hard on us novices there may come a time when we could help you ..MOAN OVERXXXX

Sharyn /yes, I agree, that Dave seems a bit dodgy. Notice how he isn't giving away any info about Lilith's descendants? I do wonder if we ought to take him seriously at all. I don't want to delete everyone on my GR tree back to Eve and substitute Lilith, only to find she had no descendants, or that his research turns out to be flawed, or that he is, horror of horrors, a mischief-maker. What a great thread ! Nice balance - recognition of newbies issues, slagging of retards, highlighting of coutesy .... and humour ! ROFPML at the biblical stuff. Anybody read 'The Da Vinci Code' ? Any Mary Magdelenes on here ? LOL

David, congrats and perhaps you ought to suggest Lilith, because that will help in the tracing for future generations.

Dave Having just tried to amend my tree on Gr to include the first wife of my 3 x gf, who was the mother of my 2 x Gfs brother (are you still with me?) I find the only way I can do it is to delete 82 descendants and re-enter them. Needless to say, I am not going to bother. So I am certainly not going to bother deleting back to Lilith, I am too old. My tree will just have to stand as a proud monument to inaccuracy. Marjorie

Mutter mutter. Why do people put the same request on Tips and on Records? I spent ages searching to help on a tips thread yesterday. Then I looked on Records and two other people had been doing the same. Total waste of half an hour. Moan, whinge, whitter on. And someone seems to have nicked my ancestor Noah. I've traced him back to when the family had to take a voyage, suddenly. Gwynne

Marjorie Don't worry about Lilith. I think there's a bit of doubt about whether or not her marriage to Adam was actually legal, which is why there's some sensitivity about it. Eve is generally recognised as Adam's wife and their descendants are all you need to worry about. Noah isn't on the ships' passengers' lists (typical!) but his sons Ham, Shem and Japhet are, though I have yet to establish which one was the eldest. nell
