Hi Deb, I posted this on your old thread, but only just realised that you must have deleted it, so I don't know whether you had any joy trying to find these two people for me on the 1871 census on Ancestry: William Henry Thomas PRIOR, aged 14/15, born London Chelsea Robert William GOULD, aged 20, born London Pimlico If you can find them on there then it could give me a bit of a breakthrough. Many thanks, Andy

Andy Report 31 Jul 2004 00:38

Robert's parents were Robert and Annie GOULD although I'm sure his father was deceased by then. Annie would have been 61 or thereabouts, born Westminster. William's parents were George and Mary PRIOR, but I have no other information on them. Andy.

Hi Debra, I wonder if you could double-check a family for me in 1871? Months ago someone helped me with this but I have been unable to trace the birth records so wondered if I had got something wrong. The family are: Lock/e Thomas, Emma, George (5), Harry (3) and posibbly Emma (1). They lived in Delce Road, Rochester Kent. The children are supposed to have been born in Chatham but I can't find those details anywhere. Thank-you very much!

Janine, Copied this after googling:- The first national census in England and Wales was taken in 1801 and from then on at 10 year intervals. No census was taken in 1941 as World War II was in progress. Between 1801 and 1831 the only information required was a head count and population statistics according to age and sex. Most of the local returns were later destroyed by central government. 1841: census returns give details of all occupants of a household on the night the census was taken, occupation, age (to the nearest five years) and whether they were born in the county Scotland or Ireland. 1851 - 1891: census returns give details of all occupants of a household on the night it was taken, their relationship, marital status, age (usually accurately recorded), occupation, county and place of birth. 1901: census returns give details of all occupants of a household on the night it was taken, their relationship, marital status, age (usually accurately recorded), occupation, whether or not a person was working at home and county and place of birth. Census information was recorded on the following dates: 7 June 1841 30 March 1851 7 April 1861 2 April 1871 3 April 1881 5 April 1891 31 March 1901 All the returns including 1841 are organised by civil registration districts which are subdivided into villages, towns or townships. Each section of the census return is preceded by a brief description of the area covered and by statistics for the area. Some of the 1821 and 1831 have survived but not many ie Buckinghamshire, and they do include names of the household. If you look in genuki website you'll find more information. 1881 is online, transcribed by the Church of Latter Day Saints, 1901 searchable then you have to pay. Others - some Cornish are free online - google free census to find any others. Otherwise, it's asking for kind lookups - some people have CDs obtainable from S&N, Stepping Stones or Archive CD Books. Usually the CDs are not indexed and an address, or at least area, is needed. Or searching through the films of census at the family records centre in London or local records offices. Hope this helps. Joy

Hi again Debra I forgot to add that I'd like to know his mother's name and his first marriage was in 1870 to Fanny Treadaway so if you don't have any earlier than that it won't give her name. Regards Diane

Hi Debra Thank you very much for the kind offer. Could you please lookup the 1871/1891/1901 census for a William James Taylor aged 67 in 1901. Born in Sussex, possibly Arundel or Wadhurst. I would love any details on him and where he was living and who with at the time. Would also love a copy of the census scan if you find him. Thanks. Irene
