DONALDSON/Northern Ireland or Ireland 1857

Can anyone give me any advice in trying to find out about my great great grandparents in Ireland? My family are Scottish through and through, except my great great grandparents and that's where I hit a brick wall because I don't know how to trace Irish roots? I have their marriage certificate. He was Thomas Donaldson, minor, labourer of Ahafin. She was Mary Ann Thomson, minor of Mullicavan. They got married on 10 Dec 1857 in the Parish Church of Clones in Co Monaghan (is this north or south Ireland?). Can anyone tell me anything else about them like their births, parents, siblings, census etc. Also does anyone have any clues as to why the may have come to Scotland? Their son, Thomas was born in Scotland in 1863 and that's where the family have remained. Any thoughts would be grately appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Irene, Sorry can't help with your family but Clones is in County Monaghan in Ireland. The reason they came to Scotland could have been the Potato Famine in 1845 and 1849. Much is unrecorded but estimates are that around one million people, about 12% of the population, died in the three years from 1846 to 1849. Betty

This doesn't help with the marriage in Ireland but they had all these children according to IGI. I have Donaldsons in the Clones area. Isobella was born to Foster Donaldson 1840. She married in Clones in 1861 if that is of any help

Hi Irene,

I have just come across a Thomas Donaldson from Aghafin who was buried in Clones on the 15th March 1868 age 77. I wonder if this could have been Thomas's Father?
