Hi Ceri,

It was indeed her second marriage! I will order the certificate, many thanks. My aunt said that there were two sons born in Blenkinsopp marriage, now deceased. Apparantly her mother Margaret Ann Cloughton nee Raine married the father of the Blenkinsopp who married my nana! no wonder I cant tell which way is what! Do you have the info on Margarets weddings so I can find out her fathers name?

margaret ann raine born c1877 in Harperley, durham
Thomas Cloughton born c1866 in Tow Law, durham
married about 1900. First son born in 1901 (thomas edward cloughton). My nana was born 1899.

Then she married someone called Blenkinsopp! possibly1920/21.

Edith Oddy Raine is definatly evading me! Can you suggest anything else I can try to follow her line back? I have been stuck for so long.

Many, many thanks again for all your hard work,
Marie.

Marie

You may want a couple of headache pills before i bombard you with the following...lol!!!

Right i looked for the marriage between Edith and Joseph that you mentioned, i found nothing for Edith O Raine, so i thought i would just try under his name of Joseph Ballan!

Upon doing this i may have revealed the problems you have experienced!!
There is a Joseph Ballan marrying in the 2nd Qtr of 1932, however i nearly cancelled it out as being your relation because he is down as marrying a lady with the surname Blenkinsopp!!

Temptation made me delve further and search for her (Blenkinsopp) to find out her first name!!

It turns out that it is your grandma!! But her surname is recorded as being Blenkinsopp!!

Do you know if this was her second marriage? or maybe the surname of Raine was her mothers or maybe even completely incorrect!

The marriage record follows: 2nd qtr 1932
Joseph H Ballan to Edith O Blenkinsopp @ Auckland, vol 10a page 364

If you obtain the actual certificate it would provide both of their fathers names and occupations, it would also provide their (Joseph and Edith's) ages at the time of marriage. It would also possibly confirm whether this was Edith's second marriage!

Hope this helps a little

Hi there

You mention in your message that you are offering military lookups. I wondered if you have the time at all if you would be so kind to look up the following (even just one would be great and I would be much obliged).

Joseph Loftus PRIVATE Princess Louise's (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders) Killed in action 1917 S/10249.

Martin Mackey PRIVATE Connaught Rangers about 1901 till 1916

Henry Elkins Major Farrier 5th Irish Lancers about 1860 till 1880. Stationed in Bengal India around 1872.

William Loftus PRIVATE Royal Munster Fusilliers 1914 till 1918 F/88061

Many thanks.

Yours sincerely

Bridget Brennan

hi Ceri,

Many thanks for looking. Isee what you mean about how vague the search is. Can you look and see if you can find out anything on parents of Edith Oddy Raine (born c1899), my grand mother, who married Joseph Henry Ballan (born c1898) in second quarter of 1932.

Edith is really stumping me as she was illigitimate. No one to ask about her father but that is were the 'Oddy' comes from! Her mothers name is Margaret Ann Raine who later married Thomas Cloughton.

sorry if this is too much! Marie

I found it!!!
I found it in the 4th qtr 1933, the record follows:
James M Loughran to Sylvia Ward - Middlesbro' - vol 9d, page 1387

You can obtain the actual cert, it will cost £7.00, you can order it online.

Sorry for getting it wrong in the first place

Marie
I did general search on freebmd for Joseph Ballan, and surprisingly, only the 3 following marriages showed up, the years of marriage for the 3 were, 2 in
1853, both in Sunderland and 1 in 1888 in Auckland!!
There maybe more but without approximate years of marriage, i cannot go through them all and BMD records only start from 1837!

Hi Ceri,

Yeah I did notice and I went to check and from what I can see her grandmother was called Susanna and her grandfather had died before any of the grandchildren had been born. Sorry, should have explained thats how I knew that wasn't her. Thanks again for all your help with finding her.

Unfortunately the census's i have are for england and wales only, the only thing you could possibly try is to start your own thread and title it Irish census record needed, or similar then hopefully someone that has access will help you.
Thanks

I dont know if you noticed, so ill just point out that the 1861 census i sent, she is on as a grandaughter!!
So in theory this could still be her!! do you recognise any of the other names as her grandparents etc.

Hi Ceri

Thanks again for trying for me. The 1861 i'm pretty sure isn't her but the 2 as servants in the 1871 census are definite possibilities. It's hard to tell which one as she changed her age all the time. i'll keep them both on record and hopefully something will come up again in the future and i'll know which one it is thats her.

Thanks again for all your help

I have searched for Elizabeth Marsh's death between the years 1941 - 1945 and have found the following possibilities!!

Elizabeth Marsh - aged 43 at time of death - Colchester - vol 4a, page 889 - 4th Qtr 1942

Elizabeth M Marsh - aged 39 at time of death - Trowbridge - vol 5a, page 158 - 4th qtr 1943

Elizabeth Marsh - aged 47 - St Helens - vol 8b page 782 - 1st qtr 1944

The other Elizabeth Marsh's between these years are all in their 70's-80's at the time of death, but from what you said i gather that she died late 30's early 40's

Let me know what you think of the above
