apart from anything else we know him to be in Africa then,,,, so he couldn't father a child in the uk....unless the wife travelled here? err Dionne, how can her father be listed as dead in 1910 and discharged from the army in 1912? something is def not right there!!!, even for me...

Dionne Report 4 Nov 2007 19:16

Hi Brenda

Thankyou for the census records.I had them all apart from the last one.

I have done another search at 24 Ancestry.I have gone though all the records and come up with nothing what soever.I do think the site is still in its infancy but new records are added on a regular basis it seems.

So it looks like Dorothea had a brother!
I wonder if she knew anything about him.She never mentioned a brother and only mentioned her sister Edith Constance.

So again Ann it looks like am pinning my hopes on you on your next viset to Kew. Fingers crossed you turn up trumps again.

Thanks all
Dionne

On a separate note your own father should be able to obtain his Naval Personal file. I know it is is possible to obtain Army records fairly easily if if you are the owner, or immediate next of kin. I would imagine the RAF and Navy have a similar policy. I assume your father is in receipt of a Naval pension therefore would imagine the Navy will still have his file.

I was able to get my grandfather's Army file and from that was able to establish that he had deserted the Army in India in 1935 and rejoined the Army in Scotland using a different surname and date of birth, married bigamously had a child etc etc!! In 1954 he went back to his original name - perhaps having dumped his second family!! Without sight of the Army file, I would never have got more pieces of the jigsaw. I know he died as in an in-Pensioner at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in 1981, we are now desperately trying to find his son, my father's half brother. On my Nan's marriage certificate to my step-grandfather she put herself down as a widow, which clearly she was not. So as the saying goes ' Nothing is set in stone, unless it is your epitath'!

Really hope you get the answers you are looking for in your search.

Hi Nicola

What a great idea.

I was only reading my Fathers Navy records today and they made great reading. So are you saying my father could apply in his own right to obtain his grandfathers Army Papers? If so do you know who he would have to apply to to get these. All we know is that Edwin (his grandfather ) was in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

many thanks

You could certainly try. If you know his full name and date of birth.

If they have it you will be able to get it. I have been successful in records from the 30's.

Write to:

Army Personnel Centre
65 Brown Street
GLASGOW
G2 8EX

There is quite a back log and it takes months to get the info if they have it and costs about fourty pound. They will certainly give you advice on how best to go about this if you are indeed able to as
you may find that Edwin's record was destroyed in the War when there was a bombing/fire that destroyed loads of the records.

In one of your earlier posts you gave your father's naval number, so my earlier post was to get you to get his file, which you appear to have done in any case.
