Ah bless you Jean.
I do hope that you that you begin to feel better soon.

Yes the information you that you have written is correct.

As to why she never put the fathers name down on the certificate is anyones guess.I am asking myself the same question.

I looked from 1931 - 1968 inc but unable to locate a death for Herbert J Sloper except for this is one that I found earlier on the thread and corresponds with his birth year.

Herbert J Sloper age 81 ( born 1886 )
Newport
4th qtr 1967
vol 8c page 220

Maybe that is why she didn't marry Mr Knight until 1971?

If his mother was married in 1942 when Richard was born, then her husband would have been put on the certificate as father even if he wasn't, as a married woman's husband is always assumed to be the father.

The only way he could have been missed off is if he went with her and signed something to say that he was NOT the father.

Hi Brenda

I think that might be the right date of death for Herbert.Newport in wales would it be? if so then looking at the Sloper family tree I do know that a couple of Slopers married walsh girls.Purhaps Herbert was viseting family.

Hi Kathleen.
Thankyou for the information. Are you absolutely sure on this because if so Then herbert was never my dads father. The more this story unfolds the more mysterious it gets.
What I cant understand is why Dorothea would go to the trouble to name my father Sloper if he wasnt the father.
The other thing that is bothering me is that looking at the Sloper family tree the name Charles seems to be passed down as first or middle names. How would she have known this if Herbert wasnt the father?
Its so confuseing,lol

Dionne

Her current surname at the time of birth was Sloper so she was entitled to name him Sloper. What she didnt do is to name her then husband Herbert as the father

At least she was honest !!

Dionne

Dionne Report 10 Oct 2007 18:27

Shirley.... Honest isnt the word,I could think of a few stonger words but must compose myself, lol

Selena... One of the stories my father was given from his mother was that he had a younger brother named David, possibly adam who died around 6months of age.many members here did searches for this brother and came up with nothing. So again I think it was another one of her 'stories; and not forgetting the possible three sisters my father might have. I have ordered certificates for all possible sisters today,I have also ordered Dorotheas marriage certificate to Arther Knight. That should tell us if she was widowed or divorsed.
As for the childrens homes I managed to talk to a lady at Shaftsbury Homes in London.my father was put there at the age of 4-5yrs old. The lady said they keep basic records which shold tell the parents names etc. She said it would take a few weeks to obtain these records so I am hoping that something turns up there.

All this happened during the war. I wonder if that's significant? Herbert would have been too old to be a soldier though.

As she didn't name a father on the birth certificate, your father would have had whatever surname his mother had at the time, whether she was married or not.

I think that these days you can give a child whichever surname you want, but it was different 60 years ago.

Dionne Report 10 Oct 2007 18:41

My father seems to think that his mother left Herbert. She then met up with a man named Mr Shipton. Shipton ended up going to prison and he was a violent man.It was not long after this that my father was sent to the childrens home.
Untill I receive the marriage certificate for Sloper and Knight there is know way of knowing if she did devorse Sloper or was widowed. That is also a very good point about being war time.

Dionne Report 18 Oct 2007 11:17

Hi All

Well I have had a few surprises this morning after receiving certificates.
Three certificates for possible sisters are as follows.

Jean Anne Sloper
dob 19/12/1933
Born Woolwich mermorial Hosp,Shooters Hill.
Father Herbert James Sloper
Mother Dorothea Maude Sloper(formerly Livermore)
Address The Grange Lodge,Mottingham Lane,Mottingham

Judith Constance
dod 25/06/1937
born Willesden.Harlesden
Father-No name given
Mother.Dorothea Maud Sloper(formaly Livermore)
Address 27 Northview Crescent,Willesden
ADOPTED

Patricia Dawn Sloper
dob 28/03/1945
born Central middlesex County Hospital,Willesden.
Father-No name given
Mother Dorothea Maud Sloper(formerly Livermore)
Address 27 Northview Crescen,Willesden
ADOPTED

Certificate of second marriage to Arther Knight
married 8th July 1971,Register office Worthing.
It shows Dorothea as a widow.
Name and Surname
Dorothea Maud SHIPTON formerly known as Dorothea Maud Knight.

So with all of this information it certainly looks like my father had three sisters two of which were adopted. The third sister does not show up as being adopted so I am trying to find information on her now.

It also seems that my fathers mother married Shipton. This is the man that my father has vague memories of as being a violent man who went to prison. When my father was put into a childrens home he was told that he called call himself Shipton or Sloper.

Dorothea had always said that she had never married Shipton. But again this looks like it could have been more lies.
I am now trying to find a marriage certificate for Dorothea and Shipton so that I can see if she was devorsed of widowed from Herbert Sloper on the certificate.

I would be really greatful for as much help as you can offer.
Many many thanks
Dionne

I can't find a marriage for Jean or Judith, going from 1951 to 1971.

Selena in South East London Report 18 Oct 2007 14:24

Not sure what happens with adoption, don't know how you go about finding if they were given new names, i.e. if Jean Sloper has a new registration as Mary Smith for example. Then would Mary (Jean) be be married in her new name if you know what I mean?

I noticed you put this "Dorothea Maud SHIPTON formerly known as Dorothea Maud Knight"

She should have been Shipton, formerly Sloper and Livermore", I think. Was she telling porkies again?

I have spoken to Willesden Library, they tell me that from 1940 - 1945 there are very little electoral registers and what little there is will be at the London Metorpolitan Archive tel no: 0207 332 3820. Now there are archives at the library for 1937 - 1940 & 1945, the nice lady there is calling me back with the occupants of 27 Northview Cresent, i explained the situation and she tells me only 1 name usually the head of the house was listed on the address directories she's got, and this person is usually a male. So you may well get another name to add to your list!
I'll write as soon as they have replied....

Wayne.thankyou so much for your efforts and help.I look forward to reading what you might possibly find out.

It looks like she split up with Herbert Sloper between 1933 and 1937 judging by the birth certs.

Did you ever order this cert that I think Brenda found?

Dorothea M Livermore mmn Livermore
Edmonton
