Mary Report 11 Apr 2008 15:44

Hi Nichole
Found him after quite a bit of searchin transcribed as Franantle on 1891 census!!!!

1891 Railway View,South Stoneham,Hants
John Freemantle Head 73 Carpenter b Bishop Sutton,Hants
Mary A Freemantle Wife 68 b Stubbington Hants
William Freemantle Gson 18 Bus conductor b St Deny's,Hants

I think that St Deny's is the Ecclesiastical parish of South Stoneham.

1901 29 North Road,Portswood,Southampton
William J Freemantle Head 26 Gas stoker b St Deny's
John Freemantle Gfather 83 Widower Carpenter b Bishop Sutton
Emma Corney Visitor 30 Domestic cook b East Cowes IOW

Strangely enough I live about 2 miles from Stubbington birthplace of William's grandmother.

Hi Mary

Many thanks for your reply and you have been helpful, at least I have a bit more to go on now.
I thought it was very strange too that Esther was supposed to be the grand daughter !
At least I have her mother's name now.

Thank you so much for your help
Kind regards
Sue

Mary Report 11 Apr 2008 14:22

Hi Sue
This is all a bit odd!!
For a start I do not think that the Tomkins folks are her Grandparents, they are too young to have a granddaughter aged 13.
I cannot find them on 1841 either BUT on IGI Esther Burr is shown as Baptised 12 Nov 1837 in Frant, mothers name Elizabeth Burr,no name shown for father.
You should ask on Genes if anyone has Parish records for Frant and request a look up.Also look for a death for Elizabeth Burr in the same records.

I am of the opinion that Esther was illegitimate and that the Tomkins "took her in".

Sorry not to be more helpful

Regards
Mary

I now have three sets of Wm.Reays wife Jannet and family with same names..."Hilton" has also changed sex between the 1851 and 61 Census (have the 1851Census info. of the above) but they should now be in living in Wallsend not still in Cumberland....I knew I should never have started the maternal branch of the family.

Doreen
I am more than a little puzzled as to how a child born in Dec 1881 appears on the 1881 census which was taken in March 1881.

I have found the following on the 1861 census, but to be sure it is the correct family you should send for Albert's marriage cert which will show the name and occupation of his father.

Lephill,Upperthong,Holmfirth,Yorks
David Kaye Head 33 Woollen scribbing engineer b Holme,Yorks
Hannah Kaye Wife 35 Dressmaker b Upperthong
Fred Kaye Son 7 b Upperthong
Albert Kaye Son 4 b Upperthong

Upperthong is in the Huddersfield Registration area.

Thanks Mary,

Unfortunately this is not my Mary Waites as she was definitely born in Colchester. Will do a bit more searching and get back to you, if that is ok.

Many thanks for your help
