Well, my uncle Bill's real name is Charles, and my great aunt Nell's real name was Alice!!
G Grandad Gifford took the name Sid, his brother Sylvanus used Herbert. Grandad's best friend Stan's real name was George.
My father in law, Sid was actually William (otherwise known as 'Bob')
My brother in law 'Bob' is really Philip.

Are my family just awkward?

Susanne was often split to Susan Ann as it was more 'Posh'. Of course the enumerator could have been a person of harder hearing!

LadyScozz Report 17 Jan 2013 01:25

The Scots are notorious for giving children one name, and calling them another. Probably because many cousins living in the same village had the same name, after grandparents. My gg grandmother's name was Jean, but she was known as Helen!

Robert ~ Bob, Robbie, Rabbie, Bert etc......... and father would be Big Bob, son Wee Bob! Not sure if they use that for males named Richard......:-D.

My grandmother is Isabella, two of her sisters are Helen & Christina........ they were Bell, Nell & Teen.

One female on my tree was Gideona, known as Jane Ann (I would too!)
