Can you give us any more background info? How old was your m-i-l when she had the baby? I assume she was in her 40s at the time.

Did your husband visit her when she was pregnant? What about the baby's father?

Did your husband have any sisters? Perhaps the baby belonged to the sister but your husband's mother tried to pass the baby off as hers.

I think I would try Social Services. Tell them your husband thinks he had a brother who may have been adopted, and see if they can find any record in the area.

If the police were brought in and a baby actually existed, Social Services would have been called in too.

Perhaps she was late registering the birth and gave a false address to avoid possible prosecution?

Sorry I should have re-phrased that a bit better, the house existed but had not been occupied.
Could it be that she was homeless and did not want to say?
I wonder what address she had the birth down as, was it the same house or a hospital ? maybe some hospital records exist.
Think myself I would contact the local police station in that area to try and establish what set of the alarm bells for them to have been investigating and to contact GRO.

If the police investigation resulted in a prosecution, there should be a write-up in the local paper, which you can find in the library of the area concerned.

In 1970 family allowance wasn't paid for the first child.

So the birth was actually reg but the address did not exist ........ I am wondering why the police would have got in touch with the GRO, not wanting to jump the gun, but could a baby have been taken in the area, and they where looking for leads.
If cannot see why someone would reg the birth but give a false address, it would be easier not to register the birth at all.
Could she have been homeless at the time ? Where did you husband live if he was born before this baby did they have the same surname `?

Was your husband born before or after 1970? Does he have other siblings who might know?

It will have to be a house check then to see if she ever lived there...and who with.

Maybe once you establish whether she did live there, a brief letter to a local paper asking for help from family or friends who knew ( name ) known to have lived in ( street name) might bring more information.

It all sounds very odd and like the others I wonder why the police got involved.

Might be worth checking the local churches for a baptism.

Something must have made her state that address, ie. perhaps she had some link to it or had lived there.

Maybe you could check the given address in old electoral lists making note too of near neighbours.
( available at a main library or archive local to the address)

There is just a chance that someone living locally is still there and can remember your mother in law or the occupants of the house.
