If you have never posted on this board before, I hope this will help you. I haven't been around here that long but the researchers are excellent and I have picked up a few tips:

Always print your request simply and plainly (with punctuation).
They need names, dates of birth/marriage etc. addresses or localities and be specific with your question as they are not mind readers.

Stay near your computer after you have posted your request as some can get back to you very quickly.

If you get a reply, click on 'reply' and respond. Always remember to thank them for their efforts, as that is common courtesy.

If you can't check for a while, come back onto this page and on the left you will see Tools. Under that you will see 'my threads'. Click on that and your headline will be shown and you can see if anyone has answered you. Clicking on that link will open up your question for you.

Never be afraid to ask if you don't know what to do next or how to use the site. Someone will generally help you out.

If you see a request that you think you can help out with, always look at the date that the request was posted. Some of them are old and the person who put the request on may not be checking or have forgotten. Send them a private message by clicking on their underscored name.

This is not a comprehensive list by any means - as I said, I am still learning - but I hope it helps someone.

This is really useful info. Just started things up again after a few years. Followed your advice and found replys from back in 2005, think its a bit late to thank anyone but i've found out some info that i asked for a long time ago.

thanks again

I am not sure what the 'add' button is for as I never click on it, I just type in the box for the reply text and then click on submit and it is added. Saves a click or two and a millisecond. Time is precious at my age!

Huia.

I will quite happily give this a nudge

and i think this should be made a sticky

Add just takes yo to the bottom of the page where you can type in your reply. Saves scrolling down, thats all.

Thanks Julie, but I don't know how one goes about 'sticky-ing' do you? I suppose it would save constant nudging up the board wouldn't it?

I've been a member for a while, but had quite forgotten about these boards until earlier this year, and then, on rediscovering them, made a lot of mistakes and got in a muddle. I am happy to share these tips with everyone and may add others as I go along.

I thought I was going mad!
I knew I had made a comment but couldn't see it. This thread is also on Records, which isn't a bad thing.

Hi Whippet Lady I have copied it onto Records/TTF and Tips as I thought it may be useful.

Just one to think to add to Cynthia's points.

Please don't post a REQUEST on more than one board. Most helpers look at all the boards and it is very annoying to find you have spent time looking for info which has already been posted on another board.

If it is a TIP, like Cynthia's, then post it on as many boards as you like.

Peter, I have usually got to the bottom of the page by reading all the threads before I add, so I dont need to scroll down. I suppose there might be some people who want to reply to a thread half way down before reading the lot. I still have to scroll down to show 'submit'.
Huia.
