i dont think margarets getting the point,
you dont have to trawl through 15 pages or 17 as it is now the info is on page 1' all other nudges etc are to keep it at the front for newbies etc to see there is'nt another way to keep it there and some of us make quips along the way

SylviaInCanada Report 31 Aug 2008 21:03

Unless GR can be persuaded to make a stickie out of this, there isn't any other way to keep it on the front page, so that newbies can read the first couple of posts.

And THAT is all that anyone has to read.

Meanwhile ........ peeps complained in the past because there were sooooooooooo many stickies on the front page, and they had to scroll down so far to get to what they wanted to read.

Seems to me you can't please everyone.

Cynthia Report 31 Aug 2008 21:05

Margaret, have you read Heather's Tips for Newbies? Good tips - constantly nudged so that they are available for new folk. What more can I say? I'm running out of explanations. ps. Feel free to join our group of happy talkative nudgers.

Heather Report 31 Aug 2008 21:58

Margaret, I dont understand your posting - why would they trawl through 15 pages to get to the useful bit? Its on page 1.

Have you got the Sort By box (to the right top of every thread) set to "Newest First" instead of "Oldest First"? That is the only explanation I can think of that makes you confused by what we are doing to assist new members.

Most of us have that box set to Oldest First by default - which means a new member would click on the thread and read the first postings which contain the useful info.

Madmeg Report 31 Aug 2008 22:03

Oh dear folks, I am really not meaning to be obstructive, and as Cynthia has just pmd to me, I am obviously not getting the point. Believe me, I know there is lots of good stuff on this site to help both newbies and oldies, and people in between like me. The last thing I want to do is to spoil the support that people give, cos I have used it to my advantage. There is lots of good stuff in this thread and others.

So here I am having just clicked on "Are You all New to This" on the Tips board, and get the first 3 pages of nothing (to which I have now contributed even more of nothing!).

Don't you all agree that for a newbie to have to wade through several pages of nothing to get to something useful is not the intention of any of you?

Maybe I am doing something wrong, in which case I am sorry for appearing argumentative. I am known for getting things wrong. I am also know for trying to do my best for others.

Now, if someone can tell me why I am wrong, I will gladly accept the explanation. And tender my apologies. But in all honesty if I am still missing the point, it would be better if you just ignored me and got on with helping the newbies. I won't feel sore about that, just lost! I can't see why my "objection" is so "objectionable".

Hey, I know you all mean well. Don't scrub me off your lists. And just to make it clear, I have had absolutely NO messages of support for my opinion, so it really must be me!

Sorry to stick at my point, and if I don't get an answer I understand, then just forget it. It has gone on too long, and I will just have to accept that I don't understand the system.

Sorry to the lady with the squeaky toy. My 17-year old cat has today attacked the end of a pen with the vigour of a kitten, and I'd like to share that with you. Yes, camaraderie is great. Just didn't think it helped the newbies.

Love to all, I really don't mean to be awkward.

Heather Report 31 Aug 2008 22:05

Margaret, please read my post just above yours. I think you have a setting which is giving you the newest posts first.

Cynthia Report 31 Aug 2008 22:18

Margaret, let me know if you see this.

Heather Report 31 Aug 2008 22:20

I have pmd Margaret just in case this is the source of her problem with these threads.

Cynthia Report 31 Aug 2008 22:49

Cynthia Report 31 Aug 2008 22:52

ps Margaret has now sorted her problem. So all's well that end's well.

Madmeg Report 31 Aug 2008 23:46

Dear all,

It seems the problem arose cos I set my "sort by" into Newest first instead of Oldest first. Newest posts seem to have all the short personal messages with no substance whereas Oldest posts have those with the "meat" of the situation.

I can't quite apologise, cos I can see nothing wrong with looking at Newest First. My mother has Alzheimers, and I am sure there are lots of people on this site in the same way as me. If you access the Alzheimer's site (which is in the same format at that on Genes Reunited) you are told never to use Oldest First cos the person posting may have lost their relative, or suffered a major problem. You are always encouraged to look at the most recent postings first and work backwards.

So I used the same philosopy for Genes Reunited, i.;e. a suggestion about a useful website that was there two years ago might have been superseded by a better one.

As a result, I found myself on the Genes website giving info from some time ago, and found it frustrating to be wading through irrelevant material. I now realise that the GR website is organised by default to show the oldest posts first. I immediately altered that to show the latest posts, and of course viewed all the chit-chat following those posts and not the substance of the posts until wading through several pages. I now appreciate that a new person to the site would access the old posts first, and not get to the chit-chat until much later. Unless, of course, he or she was also a subscriber to the Alzheimers website, heaven forbid!

So I apologise to anyone that I have upset for misunderstanding the way in which a new person to the site would access the threads.

I also appreciate that a bit of cameraderie is good, so to the lady whose dog had a squeaky toy, perhaps that was relevant at the time. It just got to me.

However, I do feel that members should take the time to delete their posts that provide no assistance to readers at all. I will be deleting mine.

I also feel, and I must say it, thought it upsets me do so, that I feel that some of you had some fun out of me at my expense. Several of you found it necessary to perform nudges for no reason (that is quite obvious from looking at the thread), and to include messages indicating such. I found it very upsetting that you should use my genuine concern about the situation to take the piss out of me and make me feel smaller that I already did. I regarded this action as very distressing to me to think that people on this site would take pride in making someone feel uncomfortable, because that is what your frenzied attack on my post seemed like to me.

And I meant no harm, only to make things clear for others.

Anyway, I hope you accept my explanation as to why I did not get to grips with the thread. And if you don't accept it, well that is up to you.

I feel very sad about all this. I didn't really make a mistake, I am apologising for anything that upset anyone, but really at the end of the day it is me who is upset.

I see messages from Heaher amd Cynthia in my inbox, perhaps they are telling me not to send this email but I am sending it.

Kind regards
