Hi
I am looking at a census 1891 for Deptford, Greenwich. RG12/500
The name is Mary Ann Parrow or Perrow (nee Welling) 2 Bowman Cottages, Tanners Hill.
On the 1881 she says born Romsey, Hampshire
On the 1901 she says born Southampton, Hampshire
I have not been able to find her on any prior census.
Can anyone read where she says she is born on the 1891?
Her husband John has been consistant all 3 census returns as born in Canterbury. She married John in 1877
Thanks
Chris

Is it something..in Marsh?

Is that her family next door? Where were they born?

Yes we believe it is her brother and family. Not totally sure of relationship as she is about 20 years older. But both Daniel and Mary had a father named William who was a Tinman so 98% sure. 2% niggle.

K Report 2 Oct 2008 19:46

It does look a reasonable asumption with Daniel's children living as nieces and nephews with John and Mary Ann in 1901

Heather Report 2 Oct 2008 19:55

So on her marriage cert it gives William Welling, Tinman?

Thats a big gap if next door is a bro (by the way it looks like Watling doesnt it on just his entry). Its just I cant find her birth ref - have you? I wondered when I first saw it whether she had been married previously and Dan was her son but if you have her marriage cert..................may be her father married twice.

Her husband is on Daniels death cert as brother in law?
I haven't manage to find a birth for her. But Daniel was born Tower Hill, and brother Stephen, b1860 Greenwich workhouse, sister Martha b1853 Deptford.
Father William - Mother Eliza Field as per Stephens birth cert.

K Report 3 Oct 2008 18:15

As in 1861 Stephen's mother is listed as born in 1829 and Mary Ann was born about 1840 I see your problem.

Is this William in 1881?

Hi K
I found the William Wellen entry a couple of days ago and he looks a possible.
But it is very difficult as the family are never together?

Oh keep thinking Heather!
There is a Romney Marsh

Sorry to be a pain - but if anyone can try and put a place to where Mary says she was born I would be so grateful. They were a family of Hawkers and I believe moved around a lot before the 1860 census

Thanks
Chris

I read this thread the other day and checked before I wrote anything but William Welling is the father of Moses Welling and William can be found in 18 Wilford Road Croydon with Moses and his wife on the 1891 census..
I am related to this group of families so contact me and I may be able to give you further info.
You are right they are Gypsies or travelling Hawkers.
Moses b c 1841 married mazally (Other spellings known) Cooper daughter of Robert Cooper and Sylvia Williams.
Robert Cooper was descended from the infamous "Norwood Coopers" of Gypsy Hill South Norwood.
Welling has been stated as Wellin, Wellings and ages different from census to census.
