Hi Magie,

I think that he was really just plain old Sneath. Like your relative, it seems that they believed that with names, more is better! and as you say, particulary in show business. You can just hear them announcing them cant you, like on the old music hall programme from TV.

I have only managed to find out that he had daughters - so far - so of course when they married the name disappears [unless they keep it as middle names like Florence Victoria Stowers Sneath Snow!!]

I still have no further details on the jailbird and what crime he committed - although if his son is anything to go by it will probably be a crime of fraud or something - maybe he was a debtor? [then, as now, crimes involving money are taken very seriously!] If I do ever find out details, I will be sure to post them on this thread!!!

I am spending the day at a library on Thursday, investigating Samuel's daughter's father in law. Apparently he was a 'prominent' man in his local community - but I cannot find out why!!!

You couldnt write some of these story-lines in a book - no one would believe you!!

I love a good mystery - even better when it is [was] real life!

Hey Elaine, this has been really exciting. So what do you think Samuel was really called? Sneath, Stowers, Snow - or all three names!. Definitely a showman, just like my Hilton Horton Bertram De Cardonel Rodgers. I think he played in a brass band and felt the need to have a new name. He is actually buried with all that rigmarole - on his own. What name did his ancestors use, surely they settled on one of them.

Have you found the jailbird yet, I found him early on, I recall you questioning me on that.

Nothing like a good mystery to keep us all alert!

Love

lainie39 Report 8 May 2009 12:33

Hi Selena - Hi Maggie,

Sorry to have kept you in 'suspence' - I have too been away on hols and couldnt wait to get back to receive the certs.

I ordered the certs you all thought would help me - and they are as follows: [please forgive me if I seem to have lost the plot a little-it seems ages since last looking at all of this!]

the witness Florence on the marriage cert does indeed appear to be Samuel's daughter/Margaret May's sister. Florence's marriage cert gives her name as Stowers Sneath Snow and of course her fathers names are the same. Florence did marry a Thomas Henry Poole who was an 'artist' the same as his father and Florence's father. Florence was 22 at the time of her marriage-so this certainly fits with the the birth date in Dublin.

Violet Stowers Sneath Snow is a witness on the marriage cert of her sister. Her birth cert gives her names as Violet Snowers - but her father is Samuel Stowers Sneath and mother Eliza Sneath [formerley NOT Ayers but Wilson? - handwriting on cert is diff to read, but it is definately not Ayers!]. On this cert his occupation is vocalist.

The death cert I ordered for Eliza Snow cannot be the correct one as she is recorded as the widow of an Edward Snow.

I think that it covers the basic info from the certs - but if I have missed anything out that is vital-please ask!!!

Maggie - I hope that this gives you an update - if you have a questions please ask.

oh - did I tell you all that I emailed [in desperation!] the Norfolk Family History society to ask if they knew of pat@gilhayward who invited contact to find out more about Samuel Sneath Snr and his stay in prison [just a stab in the dark] and they have emailed me and given me an email link to an achive of partial records and a contact for the Norfolk records office to find out if they have details - will let you know if I find out any further info re this

Elaine, can you summarise all the evidence so far and explain any gaps. Or perhaps you have solved it all.

Selena, Val, Netty and Rose - what treasures you all are!!

Yes, I AM well please with all this information and yes, I WILL need to win the lottery to buy all of the certs - however, I cannot leave it without doing so. Once you get the bug to find out - it doesnt let you go!!

I will let you all know information from the certs when they arrive [if you are interested?] after all the hard work you have all put in for me it is the very least I can do. I am sure that they will just confirm what you have all suggested though. Samuel was a very 'busy' man!

I now have Eliza's family too - so this is another thread that I could follow. Thank you all so much!

however, I do have bad news - I have just followed Val's advice to email the contact regarding further info on Samuel Snr and his incarceration - and have received an 'undeliverable mail' notification. I will get onto the ancestry.com site and see if I can leave a message anywhere for this person.

Elaine

ps/ if i ever decide to set up a detective agency - would you all like a job?

Brilliant Rose / val, I think Elaine will be pleased with the extra info found tonight. I see that Eliza is a widow, living on own means on the 1901 Rose, what a shame, it would have been nice to see hubby there too. I have looked for Eliza / Violet on the 1891 but nothing as yet. Still, tomorrows another day.

Elaine, i think you're gonna need a lottery win for all these certs lol.

Is it ethical for me to copy and paste the google into this thread. It is public information isn't it. Anyone can view it.

Ah too bad if it's not, I'll just plead temporary insanity. Here it is

SNEATH Samuel Pris M 34 M Labourer Norwich-Norfolk, City Gaol St Giles Road ... I have more details [email protected], All Saints Parish, ...

Go for it Elaine, might be a lead.

Hi All, I didn't wish to butt in on these proceedings but I had an idea. I messaged Elaine and asked her to google "Samuel Sneath UK". There is an untitled document reference to his time in incarceration. What I was more interested in is the email address available for "more information".

Thought I'd just better let you lot know. I know Elaine has not opened the message so Elaine if you are reading this, put a search into google for Samuel Sneath UK and let us know if you are able to contact the person pat@gilhayward etc etc. And I have no idea how old the link is.

Hi Elaine, on the 1901 census Florence & husband are just "Boarding" with Robert & Eliza Geldart, advertising agents, it doesn't state the they are related in any way. I would be soooo tempted to order the marriage cert of Florence V if she were mine, at least this way you would learn her fathers name and find out how she fits into the picture !!.
Her birth certificate would help you more but she was born c1878 Dublin, i have no access to Irish records i'm afraid, i wish i had, the suspence is killing me lol.
