Hi, just looking for some help with regards to Birth Certificates, I recently obtained what I thought was my Great Grandad's B/C, however his dad's name on the certificate was not the same - so wrong certificate, how can I tell before I order a certificate whether it is the right one.

The details we have are that his full name is James Henry Bridger, born 1875 July/August/September - his fathers full name is Henry James Bridger (died before 1902) - the certificate we got which is wrong shows the fathers name as Henry Charles Bridger which is incorrect.

Any ideas would be great

You can request a certificate stating the father's name and if it doesn't match they will refund part of the money.

I got the certificate via St. Caths.com - when I tried to do another search and advised on the additional notes the full name of his father so not to get the original again - once the search came back I e-mailed to query the fathers name before we ordered and they said that they could not advise whether it was correct or not - didn't mention anything about a partial refund on the original one either.

James Henry was born in Lambeth - his dad's occupation on James Henry's marriage certificate seems to indicate Seaman (the end part is missing so cannot say for definiate but first three letters look like Sea)

SORRY, but how much did you pay for that cert? You should be paying no more than £7 when you use a gro ref from GRO online.


EEK, just looked at that site you mention, St Caths!!! They are charging for searches of bmd??? You can do that free on freebmd.org AND they charge nearly £15 for a cert - DONT USE THEM AGAIN!!

Hazel, read the Tips for New Members - you are being conned by that site. All they are doing is ordering the cert from GRO and charging you extra for doing it!

I'm having problems trying to identify one born in Lambeth.

What is the name of the mother on the cert you have to try and find that one and eliminate him.

Hi Heather - glad I posted this now, can't believe I can get the certificate cheaper - glad I have only ordered the one from them (and that was wrong!) - so grateful for any tips

In answer to the other questions, have only found James Henry Bridger on the 1911 Census, can't find anything else.

I have a copy of his marriage Certificate - he was married to Nelly Bales on May 4th 1902 in Lambeth. His dad Henry James Bridger and her dad Henry William Bales were both deceased at this point.

James Henry Bridger resided at 48 Wickham Street
Nelly Bales (mother's name is Rebecca Bales nee Stevenson) resided at 3 Hunt Street.

Sorry for all the questions but what was James Henry's occupation on his marriage cert?

I presume he gives Lambeth as his birth place in 1911. Were any of the witnesses from the Bridgers family?

Also the mothers name on the wrong cert please.

No problems with the questions, really glad for all your help.

James Henry Bridger's occupation shown on the marriage cert is Labourer.
Witnessess were Henry Bales (not her father as he was deceased so presume another relation) and Alice Bales - no Bridger's were witnessess.

The wrong mother and father names on the certificate already received are Henry Charles and Sarah Maria.

There's only one Nelly Bridger living in Lambeth 1911, and Lambeth=rd25, so we can search for all folk living with Nelly Bridger with a census ref of rd25.

A couple of further searches show pob=Lambeth for the 3 guys, but not for Nelly

Hazel, not read all through this - supposed to be working - but if the father were deceased and died when the boy was young, it may well be the son confused his name. So dont discard the cert immediately. I had one with the wrong first name for dad but the right surname - he had used his step fathers first name. People didnt delve much into the past back then, deaths were frequent and you had to move on, it may well be dads name was never mentioned to the son as he grew up.

Oh, Ive bumped up the thread on Tips for New members for you to read through. Basic stuff but obviously could have saved your first cert costing double :)
