Marion.

I expect you have already contacted Carolyn who has Jessie Tedstone 1894 Halesowen on GR.

Or Stephen who has Jennie Bradford 1875 Ruabon Denbighshire Wales

Marian Report 20 Jan 2010 18:14

Hi Nicky, I am making sense of most of it and trying to digest the rest, you all work so fast, its very impressive. I will get Thomas Tedstone's birth certificate 1867 and agree with what you say about the Policeman, it doesn't fit in at all. Thank you for all your hard work. Marian

Madmeg Report 20 Jan 2010 00:47

I imagine that given Marians recent family problem, she will need a few days to absorb all that everyone has found. And there is a lot.

I keep being a pain, but has anybody found Jennie Bradford?

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 19 Jan 2010 22:01

Hi Marian..... Glad your family problem is sorted out...

Hope you can piece together some of the information we`ve given you and make some sense of it....... remember these are ONLY suggestions of Thomas Tedstones roots , and i`m not really sure that any of this information ties in.

I think the way forward if you agree that this is all feasible is to purchase the Thomas Tedstone birth cert. for Clun 1867.

The more i look at this family ,the more i become convinced that Thomas Tedstone Policeman, didn`t exist........this family are all Ag labs, manual workers, there is no trace of any Tedstone who is a Policeman on any census that I have looked at, {and believe me i`ve looked at a lot of Tedstone entries lately!!} Making up a fathers name for a marriage cert. was VERY common practice among illigitimate children.

Christine in Portugal pointed out that the Martha married to William Jones was 10 years younger than the one i found earlier in the census, that I proposed was mother of Robert George b 1863 and Thomas born 1867 both in Clun. I am not convinced by that as I think as she married a younger man she may well have dropped 10 years off her age. { another common practice}.... I will go and see if she had any more children by 1901, as in 1891 her youngest child Annie is 13, if she was really 55 then and not 45 as she states its no surprise that she didn`t have anymore, as she would have been 42 when she gave birth to Annie.

Hi everyone, I've just been reading through your postings, I don't know how on earth you manage to get so much information together so quickly, its fantastic detective work! I will take a bit of time to try and absorb it all to see how it all fits together. Thank you so much. Marian

Some Sterling work done here friends. I'm sure Marian will be delighted when she has time to absorb it all.

But still no idea who Jennie Bradford is.

I agree that Thomas Tedstone policeman is probably not real.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 18 Jan 2010 12:21

Just had confirmation that the age of Mary Jane Bradford on her marriage is wrong - she is 20. So she is likely the one we found in 1881 with parents John and Letitia. Well done Nicky for thinking of that one.

Just also to add that Marian's family crisis is hopefully resolved.

EDIT......Extracted entry from IGI that includes brother John as per 1841 census....still no sign of a Thomas...!!

This family gets more complicated.....

1861 Perry Gutter Hopesay Shopshire....same address as my previous 2 postings.

Charlotte Davies Head Widow 75
Martha Tedstone unmarried daughter 25
William Harding ????? age 1

next door.....

William Griffiths Head 30 married Ag Lab
Charlotte Griffiths Wife 32
Lueza Tedstone Daughter 12
Emily Tedstone Daughter 6
John Griffiths son 9 months.

next door...

William Tedstone Head Married 40 Ag Lab
Eliza Tedstone Wife 38
Harriett Price Daughter 13
George Price son 9
Sarah Tedstone Daughter 6

So this accounts for the only 3 Tedstone children I can find Charlotte, William and Martha, children of Charlotte and John Tedstone {IGI submitted entry gives a possible marriage}

So my theory is Thomas Tedstone Policeman dosn`t exist, and Thomas born 1867 Clun and maybe Robert George born 1862 Clun also are the illigitimate children of Martha.......... Martha then dies, and the children are bought up by her brother William and Wife Eliza.

Looks like Robert George marries in Wolverhampton in 1893....his marriage cert, may be more informative than brother Thomas`s.

Nicky

Don`t know what happens to Lueza and Emily Tedstone, unless they start calling themselves Griffiths, as I can`t find them again under Tedstone.

Nickydownsouth Report 17 Jan 2010 23:22

If we are working on the theory that Thomas Teadstone/Tedstone nephew of William Tedstone in 1871 and 1881 is our Thomas then i think this is his birth registry...

Births Mar 1867 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tedstone Thomas Clun 6a 566

Clun covers the area including Clungunford which is given as Thomas`s birthplace in both those census`s.

There is also Robert George born Sept. 1862 in Clun reg. district.....brother of Thomas listed with same family as him?

Charles Pressdee/Sarah Tedstone {daughter of William and Eliza} in 1887 marriage also Clun

And then William Tedstone death 1883 Clun age 63... we already know Eliza is a widow by 1891 so pretty sure this must be the correct family.

there is also a Charlotte Tedstone marriage to William Griffiths 1859 in Clun.

Is Charlotte the sister of William and Thomas the alleged Policeman.??

Think Marian needs to get the Thomas birth cert. 1867 Clun, as everything fits in with it being the correct person.

Just a thought but if Robert and Thomas are with Uncle william and family in both 1871 and 1881 ,were they orphaned?.....in which case they may know nothing about their parentage......and as we all know our ancestors were very good at fabricating fathers details on marriage certs.!!!

Off too look for a Thomas, William and Charlotte Tedstone born Shropshire in 1851 and 1841....

Nickydownsouth Report 17 Jan 2010 22:23

The reason i know that GRO certs are wrong is my gr grandfathers marriage entry.........GRO and of course subsequently freeBMD have his 1875 marriage down as Charles Francis.... I ordered the cert. and the age was also wrong, but all other details were correct. I knew that he married a Margaret Leslie.... I found the correct entry and details at LancsBMD, ordered the certificate from them and the name and age was correct Charles Furniss.

Getting back to the Bradford/Tedstones...I`m sure Mary Jane Bradford is the family from Maughan street that was found in 1881 and 1891. Especially with that also being Jessies birth address., I have also combed the censuss but can not find another Mary Jane Bradford that fits other than her.

I also did an 1891 census address search on St Lukes Road yesterday, but found no Bradfrods /Tedstones or witness surnames....... but of course they may have just used that address to put on the certificate, or have been there for a very short time before the marriage.

I have an early death cert before they gave ages for a Mary. When I received the cert and looked very closely I saw it was Mercy age 10 months. Surname also transcribed as Durbey Burden should be Darby Burden registered in Dudley

The writing on the cert form GRO was hard to read

However the bonus was she was the baby sister of my gt grandfather who I knew nothing about and her mother Harriett registered the death in 1857.
At this stage I still havnt found Harrietts death
